Hi,

Here's the second metalish tune, Heavy D , from a band I'm recording now, Evven Stevven.

How's the balance...

Any comments...

im listening on my computer speakers

so I can't offer any critical mix comments. The top end of the drums sounds a little dull but this may just be the mp3. Everything sounds balanced out pretty well. I really don't like the tone of the guitars but thats obviously the bands choice. Sounds like a good start, im sure someone will come along with some better help.
The band sounds alot like Godsmack. The whole chug chug , chug chug, chug chug, gets pretty repetitive. I know you are just the engineer. I thought i would comment though. Nice work.

I'll check the top end on the mp3, I did a quick listen but I haven't really listened to the mp3.

in my opinion i hate the music and im a big metal fan, but the recording is great! might kick the vocals up just a notch, good job!

Nice job. The drums and guits sound great. The vocals are probably the weak point. I'd compress the hell out of them and push them up in the mix. If you guys are still tracking I'd double it a bit and keep it low in the mix to beef up his voice.
 
Yea turn up/compress the vocals abit. Another suggestion: you might wanna lower the highs of the drums abit.

I take it the drums are a bit bright for you... whereas Wireneck says they're too dull. I appreciate the feedback.
 
that looks like a better piece of software then what im using... i think ill ditch Cool Edit soon ! also how did you mic the drums and what mics did you use? Good Job BTW

If MIDI is not your main emphasis, then check out SAMPLITUDE. I'm using Samplitude Pro. You can download a Demo version. But, the learning curve can be steep.

As for the drums:
Overheads - 2 NTKs
Snare - 57 top and 57 Bottom
Toms - 57 on each
Kick - D112
Ride - 4050

I don't like my snare at all, and since I'm not a drummer I probably won't buy a new one. I used Drumagog to replace the Snare and Kick. My snare and kick are OK for an 80's Rock n Roll, lighter rock, or Country but I prefer this heavier hit snare sound and slappier kick. But the rest is my Kit (Overheads, Cymbals, and Toms)

I've uploaded a new mix Heavy D (4) . I've softened the cymbals and raised the Vox and Lead. If you will, please check it out and let me know what you think.

Nice recording!

I think this was really tracked very well. I like the sound of the instruments alot. The vocalist is "iffy" to me. He has some Glen Danzig-isms that annoy the shit out of me. But then in other spots he sounds like Sully from Godsmack! Personally i would stick with the latter. I can't really complain about anything in the mix, it sounds great. If this Sully Danzig guy can do harmonies you should try a couple on the lines where he says "deep inside i cannot hide," like around 110-120. Other than that i think the mix is nailed. Maybe the lead and voxs are a touch too loud now...Maybe...Good job again, keep up the good mixes.

This sounds great, I really can't hear anything wrong with it. The drums sound excellent, I'm interested in hearing how you miced them, guitars too.

I like the tune. As far as the mixes go, I would like to hear one with the vocals and Lead Guitar somewhere in between the two mixes. If I had to choose between the two, I prefer the first mix.


What did you use for the guitar setup?

I am headed in the middle with the levels. Actually I like the vocal a bit on top versus the first mix. But the lead in the second is coming down about 1.25db.

Here's the guitar setup:

Les Paul - Stock Pickups and not sure which model... but a late version

5150-II - Crunch Channel (deafeningly loud)

Mesa RECTO 2x12 cab

SM57 and 4050 mic pointed at center of one speaker

Mixed to taste

With the following EQ Curve on each track

The rhythm gtr was doubled... so that's four tracks
