Take any distortion pedal....any, and get yourself a parametric eq. This is the ticket to that balls to the walls metal sound. I use a Boss DS-1 and an old Boss parametric EQ pedal along with a Boss GE-7 into an old Ampeg from the 60's. I get sooo many people coming up to me after gigs asking 'how the fuck are you getting that tone from that piece of shit amp?'....Spend $70 bucks and get an EQ. An EQ pedal will work fine. When I was a kid my dad had a TEAC 2 channel 10 band EQ on his stereo. He never used it so I patched it in after my distortion pedal and ran that to my amp. FFFFFFAAAAATTTTT. Sounded great. Most places that sell stereo equipment sell these types of EQ's for $50 to $60 bucks....give it a shot.

how did you use the eq... that's kinda like saying i bought a gibson and i played THIS style of music.. we don't know what it sounds like

Tweak to taste.....
Here is how I run the set up:

Guitar-->Dist-->Parametric EQ(set to suck out all midrange)--->Graphic EQ(with a little boost on the highbands--they to get lost when take out a large amount of midrange)----->AMP.

If you go the route of using an Equalizer that would normally be used with a home stereo: GTR--->EQ(tweak to taste)---->Amp.

I thought that my initial post was fairly self explanatory. Sorry for my vagueness.

I'm a vintage freak. So please explain to me how a '60s Ampeg is a "piece of shit amp"..........

you cleared it up.. i didn't mean how you physically used the eq.. i meant how did you set it... you obviously use it to suck on the mids, that was what i was wondering

>I never said my amp was a piece of shit.

True. You said: "I get sooo many people coming up to me after gigs asking 'how the fuck are you getting that tone from that piece of shit amp?'"

You seemed to be taking pride in the fact that your EQ pedal was getting a good sound out of a 'piece of shit amp'.

> I also never said an eq and a 'metal pedal' can make a crappy amp sound good

True. You said: "Take any distortion pedal....any, and get yourself a parametric eq. This is the ticket to that balls to the walls metal sound."

>I don't know the exact model. It has 2 inputs one for guitar and accordion.

Heh. Same with my '67 Reverberocket. But I think they have 12" speakers. Mine had a 1962 Oxford alnico. I don't know which Ampegs used 10" speakers. Great sounding amps, especially cranked up!

Have you checked out:

Great source for those hard-to-get parts.

Thanks for the link dude.....Sorry if I came across as a douche..

I was wondering the same thing Daddy-O. I wouldn't consider a 60's Ampeg to be a piece of shit. It may not be the ultimate amp for your type of music, but if it was a piece of shit, you wouldn't be getting that tone you like, no matter how much EQ you applied.
Which model is it Gargamel?

No offense, Gargamel, but I find your post pretty... umm... interesting. :)

You seem to be saying that any crappy amp and any "heavy metal mucho shredder" pedal will give you a good tone as long as you use an EQ pedal.

Far from the case, I'd say.

I'd perhaps agree that using an EQ pedal will allow you to dial out unwanted frequencies, but the tone doesn't come from EQ, for the most part. The tone comes from the player, guitar, and amp. If the first three aren't there, no EQ pedal in the world is gonna fix it.

Starting with a kick-ass 60's Ampeg tube amp, in my opinion, is one great way to get a good tone. You were certainly very fortunate there. My 1967 Reverberocket 2 had some of the best tone you'd ever want to hear cranked up with a Strat and Tube Screamer in front of it.

More of my opinions on this subject can be found here (for what they're worth):

#1 I never said my amp was a piece of shit. So CharlesThomas please do not misquote me. (cool website) I also never said an eq and a 'metal pedal' can make a crappy amp sound good. Never said it. I also never said my amp was a piece of shit. Never.
As far as the amp...i love it. I don't know the exact model. It has 2 inputs one for guitar and accordion. It has one reverb(echo) control, tremolo (speed and depth) vol, treb and bass. It has a 10" Utah speaker in it...The amp sounds great.
