Hi everyone. Here's a song we've recorded recently... Been running in circles with this and I need opinions from metal producer guru's. Here's what I've come up to at this point.

I'm really having trouble on getting a good drum sound and to get everything to sit well on the mix. HELP GUYS!

Thanks in advance!

I would first start by cutting out the frequency in the bass guitar that is ringing throughout. It is killing the mix.

I am curious what you are monitoring with? Headphones?

I'll do that as soon as I got back to my mixing PC.

Here's a link of what it used to before I drastically boosted the low frequencies because I thought it filled out that lack of body earlier.

You got that right! Headphones. Its all I have at the moment.

That is actually better. Still that ringing in the bass guitar is there. Guitar on right sounds dark compared to the one on the left. Snare way too much reverb for my taste. Sounds like it is in a different room than the rest of the band.

Just some things I notice. :)

Hello, I am using as a reference the second track you posted. It have indeed some issues going on, but nothing that can't be tamed with some wise tweaking. So, on the track.

First off, I'd like to mention that the vocals are too up front for my taste. Maybe that's a personal issue but is kinda distracting.

As jimmy mentioned before, I prefer the guitar track in their pure state to make it sound raw and vicious. If you have reverb applied to those tracks, try reducing the wetness of that particular effect. Concerning the guitar solo, preferably pan it to the center.

There's one thing that caught my attention: the cymbals. There's some passages where the crash sounds "washed". Once again, it could be a problem with the reverb. In this case, maybe you can solve this balance the direct signal (in case you have one, which is more common for hi-hats, snare, and kick) with the overhead cymbal.

I'm considering everything you guys are saying. Im just taking a quick coffee break before I go back to the board.
Yeah there are some serious reverb issues that I've just realized in the mix.
The guitars are pretty raw though. only have a eq's and a compressor there except for the subtle flange on the center of the chorus.
Trying to reduce that "washed sound" coming from one of the overhead mic tracks. I hate that track! it sounds muffled and the cymbals esp crash's are exploding when hit even in its raw form. Sounds like a bad mic placement or gain staging. pffft

Hey guys. Here's what I've got on now. Any comments would be greatly appreciated.

I'm going to go with 'much better'!

Though now the issue is going to be with the vocals. They really sound almost out of place in the mix. Here, I would use a room verb with two compressors previous to the verb send (one with fast attack, and one with slow attack). This will help to keep his voice under control. Don't place the verb on the track. Create a reverb bus send. Use the same one for the backup vocal tracks as well. The intro synth is over the top man. Even looking at the waveform shows that. The song looses it's feel when it comes in with less power. Yeah, is sounds kinda cool, but it takes away from the songs build up as it seems to lose power when it ends. The opposite of what you want it to do. Also, the singer could use some pitch correction. I would also likely throw an eq on his voice to help fit it in the mix, after compression. Hard to say without having it under control first.

Just my opinion... :)

You are on the right track though man!

Vocals are not sitting well I would agree. The guitar riffs are coming through like I would imagine you want as it seems to be the pivot of the song.

Much better with the cymbals! As the two guys before me stated, the voice is kinda dry and needs some reverb. Run it through a bus, no directly on your track. In tht way you can control the amount applied to different passages o the song.

Listening to the drums solo'd, sounds like the snare and kick are clipping maybe? Some sort of crackling.

Thanks man!! I've tried your suggestions and nibbled a bit on the eq and stuff...

Here's what I've got on now.. What do you guys think?

Thanks!

The file states that the track is not available, something wrong with the upload, maybe?
