Hey!

I've been upgrading some equipment in my home studio lately, and finally I feel that I'm getting a pretty good and decent quality.
The following song is a song that I made to my solo project called Withered Leaf. I play all the instruments there.

What do you think of it? And perhaps you have any tips to improve? I will record real drums as soon as I get the acoustic threatment, but for now i just added the drums with my synth. Also, I will add vocals. Both clean and growl.

Edit; Thanks for commenting everyone. If you wanna follow me and get a notificate when I've re-recorded, you can follow me at facebook. http://www.facebook.com/pages/Withered-Leaf/199651923393425?sk=app_2405167945 Would be cool to get a like or two too though.

Thanks guys! Hoping for some feedback! :)

Sounds pretty well thought out. Not sure about the snare though.
You might condier EQing the bass to give it a little more defintion when the guitars are monstering things.
Utub isn't a great place for posting. If you look & listen around this forum you'll find other options that will provide better quality &/or convenience.
My most recent post has a streamer as well as a download. Given that you're relatively new a streamer would be a good option & once poeple get to know you & your work they'll want to download and listen to better quality audio for detail etc.

Hey, and thanks for your feedback. :)
Like I said, the drums are just example drums recorded with my synth. I have a acoustic drumset and some microphones that I will record as soon as I get some acoustic threatment. And thanks for your tips, man. I made an soundclick account now, and uploaded the song there. MP3 Player SoundClick

Cheers!

Sounds good but the snare lets the song down. I see you're working on that so look forward to the next version

Thanks mate. Yeah, I agree with you the snare let the song down. Thats why I'm looking forward to get the real drums recorded! :)

I like the synth tone.

I'd go easy on the crash. It's just taking up space that would be better used by guitars.
Speaking of, a lot of the guitars sound pretty buried. Especially in the first 2 minutes.

You've got some potential here, but it's not quite face-melting yet.

Hey, and thanks for the feedback. I agree with you on these points, and I am still working on this. I am currently waiting for some equipment that I'm about to order. Like the ENGL 530, which will improve the guitar tones very much. And also a couple of cymbals (Paiste 2002 crash and china), some drum microphones and a little bit more. As soon as I get these things I will re-record, and hopefully it will turn out even better. Even though I am pretty satisfied with the result I already got. For just a few months ago I was far far far away from the quailty that I can achieve now. I am still 17 years old, so I can't afford my whole wish-list of equipment, but I am getting there, slowly, but safe. :)

Again, thanks man. Appreciated!

The piece is pretty well arranged.
Some things you might want to consider:
- snare sound doesn't fit to this style, it has no body at all, just a pop sound to it.
- the cymbals tend to over-power sometimes and the kick kind of gets lost.
- the guitar sound lacks mids making it over-fizzy, kind of very scooped
With some tweaking and a proper drum sound this could turn out very good.

Hey and thanks, Joeym. Great with some feedback and tips.
As you've probably already read above in my previous comments, I am aware of the drums and I will re-record the drums when I get the a couple of microphones and acoustic threatment that I am waiting for. My snare on my real drumset sounds totally different than the snare sound I got from my synth. Hopefully it will turn out much better drum wish. I am also going to re-record the guitars when I get my preamp.

Again, thanks for taking your time to listen and check it out. I'll follow your tips. :)

Since this is a preview, it's hard to critique... I agree with what has been said about the snare, and I add the cymbals are way too loud. That crash cymbal is kind of irritating after awhile. Everything else was well done, in my opinion.

I disagree about the snare. I like that sort of snare sound, high and with a lot of pop, especially for metal, and especially for blasting. I play a piccolo snare with a kevlar head and it reminds of that sound. Obviously a real one will be better than synth, but I like that type of snare sound

The real ones can be pretty damn nice indeed. Let's take for example Chris Adler's snare, from Lamb of God. If you've heard it. I love that snare. I belive it is the Mapex Black Panther.

Guitar's mids are to scooped.
Kick is a little lacking in the "clicky" area.
I actually like the snare because it's different.

When you add real drums, add a bass and redo the guitars. That's pretty hard to listen to.

the intro riff is EPIC and I love those Synth voices - give it a really Dark, Foreboding sound - I do think the snare needs a bit more body to it but overall the production and sound of the guitars are huge

I agree with the guitars being scooped. Too much treble which takes away the thickness and power of them.

low pass or high shelf on those distorted guitars and it well def give the cymbals room to shine and you could even back the high end of them a bit so they aren't so hissy.

Is anyone else hearing poorly intonated guitars or is it just me?

And eveyone else, thanks for critics and tips. Keep em comming! I will upload this song again when I've fixed the guitars, bass and drums a little bit. Also when I've added vocals, I suppose. Waiting for some drum microphones and a preamp (ENGL 530).

I loved the one Vocal that went AOOOORRRGGGGG. I was disappointed when no more vocals popped up. The snare sounds like a metronome or something. Just doesn't work at all. It just needs a better mix and more vocals. It doesn't sound thought out or arranged to me like the others have been saying. Maybe I'm missing something, but it's a good foundation. I can see myself liking it and I'm a person who listens to extreme metal day in and day out (along with all kinds of other types of music).
