here is a recording i just did of this metal band, not the greatest band but thats not what im concerned about, I am really happy with this recording, its proboly the best i have done so far but I am still wanting to get better and right now I see my biggest weakness in being in the guitar, i am currently recording with an SM57 in a little isolation booth made out of a sideways tables, carpet and blanket (a little idea i picked up out of recording magazine), does anyone have any suggestions on what I could do to make my guitars even better, or just any suggestions on this recording in general thanks a lot

the drums sound WAAAYY too compressed. the cymbals feel really pumpy. the kick drum is kinda lost too, maybe needs a little more "click" to help it out. the guitars sound OK, just needs some more clarity in the highs.. the vocals are really cool. the song itself is pretty cool too.

In addition to the prior post on the drums, the guitars have little separation. You might want to pan the drums more center, guitars left or right, and bass opposite them. Guitar could use a little more treble so it stands out more. Vocals sound fine for the genre.

I hate this style of music. lol

Sorry mate, that's really not great. On my headphones, drums are none existent except for those tinny cymbals and I can't really make out guitars from bass. More seperation, less compression, better use of dynamics needed. Have a little read round the forums for tips on getting the recording better at the source and also look at how other people have recorded stuff similar to yours. However, never give up, and keep learning! (Even you do insist on mixing w**k songs :p)

thanks for the drum comments, i guess i didnt realize that those needed more work than my guitars did, ill make sure to level those out better next time before i record, other than like adding more high end to the guitar is there anythign i should do when i record a band next time for the guitar

turn the cymbols way down or tell
the drmmer to stop killing the cymbls

The guitars soud a bit muddy and not very in your face.
I would get rid of the isolation booth for recording the guitar amp.
I dont see any need for this.
If you only have an SM57, then close mic. Wait until you ahve the right sound coming from the amp before even touching the mics, and pre amps. Once you have the sound from the amp (listen with your ear up close to the amp as thats where the mic is going to be). Since you only have an SM57 you dont have a choice in mics, but you can try different positions of the mic. Different angles the mix points etc.
For mixing, I would watch your low mids around 200-300Hz for the guitars. And hi pass around 100Hz.

i wonder if the english thing was a joke.

was this a live recording?
like the others said, the kick is nearly non-existent.

with guitars downtuned that much, you're going to want more high end.

did you record this with any specific software?

my strongest advice would be to multi-track it to a click and eq the tracks individually out there. a big problem here are the individual tones, or the quality of the amp/kit being used.

sadly yes this is in english

this was multitracked though, and i used adobe audition but i definitly had the overheads too high cause i can definitly tell they are drowning out the rest of the drum sound and as for the guitars i really dont know a whole lot about recording guitars so i didnt eq it when i recorded it and i tried messing around with some eq on the computer but yeah ill have to read up a bit more on recording guitars and ill make sure to level the drums out better next time
