i was reading up on these things..they seem pretty cool..do they really give you that Mesa sound or is it just another freakin tube pedal that just gives you warmth and you spend hours trying to make it sound like a mesa boogie lol? well i guess its the real deal because it says Mesa boogie on it..but then again i could just be paying for the brand name hmm??? what are some opinions on this preamp/pedal? how do they sound? does anyone have any sound clips of it? and how good of a job it does for direct recording? any info on this preamp will be helpful thanks!

i have the vtwin and yes it does go someway to getting that mesa sound but some people say it a sort of cross between a mesa and say a marshall. I think expecting two small tubes to simulate a mesa boogie combo cranked up is pushing it a bit....even the one fx rack unit they do thats about four times the price with speaker emulation circuits is by some reports not quite there either but they really are getting down to the finer points of the boogie sound.

Having said that its a pretty good preamp/distortion unit in its own right. The market seems to be recently flooded by many other fx units using the exact same tubes and clouding what used to be an easy purchasing descision. Some say you should check out how hot the tubes run in each unit..the hotter the better. Great for DI without pissing off the neighbours.

Famous users include bob smith of the cure.

I've got one and love it! I carry it in my gig bag for emergencies at gigs, and it has saved me a couple times. It doesn't sound like a full Boogie amp, but for direct into the board, it's really pretty good. If you're looking for one you should probably grab it pretty quick as they are no longer being made. Koch also makes a great unit that uses 4 12ax7 tubes and is a killer. I have it in my studio for direct recording...too big to carry in my gig bag though.

on bass anyone???

A couple of years old thread, it seems, found by the search function.:D

I just told someone selling this thing to mail it for me, costs big bucks, but hell, so does everything else.

I can use it for guitar, but also I'd be keen to try the clean and crunch on bass!!!
some thread in talkbass.com touched that a bit, anyone here tried that????

Di/preamps are many these days, but I'd like something "weird".:D

After getting this, I'll own the discontinued V-twin, discontinued ENGL preamp/pedal, HK Tubeman and other assorted tubepedals, should do an A/B test on a video sometime..
