i do classical, so my list and needs are a bit different than most of you. over the past year, i have sold my pair of neumann tlm103s, my pair of royer r-121s, my pair of rode NTKs (those are very nice LDC's, btw), a pair of SP C1s, a pair of rode NT5s, a pair of AT4041s, and all i have right now is:
2X - Neumann KM184s
2X - Neumann-Gefell M300s
and am shopping for sennheiser mkh40s, schoeps cmc6/mk4s, or perhaps DPA 4011s and a pair of KM130s. i have given up on the idea that there are any inexpensive mics that will suffice for classical recordings. i continue to be baffled by the fact that so many people will spend so much time and money trying to make decent recordings, yet still dont seem to understand that the microphone is THE MOST CRITICAL link in the signal chain. IMHO, the best thing you can do in this business is to put your money in good mics.
