Here is my humble mic locker:

Large-Diaphragm Condensers
Audio-Technica AT4040
MXL 2001

Small-Diaphragm Condensers
Studio Projects C4 (x2)
MXL 603s (x2)

Ribbons
Cascade Fat Head II

Dynamics
Shure Beta 52
Shure Beta 58
Shure SM57
Audix D2
Audix D3
Sennheiser e604 (x3)

I'm very satisfied with it right now. The only changes I would make would be to replace the Beta 52 with an Audix D6 and possibly replace the e604s with CAD M179s. I might also like to pick up a Shure SM7 eventually, since everyone here raves about it.

ok here it goes my mic list

sm57 2
nady 7 piece drum mic set
rodr nt5s 2
akg c1000s 1
akg c3000 1
akg 2000b 1
mxl v69 1

i counted the 7 piece kit as 1 mic and stil put myself in the wrong poll oh well lol

I now have 8 times as many mics as when I voted. (at which time I had one :D ) And I may be picking up a couple more tonite!

Added the wireless versions of 6 Beyer Opus 81s and 2 Beyer TGX-60s. Should be fun and games on stage. I'm now set for my Christmas shopping for some of my musician friends.:D

1 SM7b ($300)
1 AT4047 ($382)
1 AT3035 ($105)
1 NT-1a ($229)
1 SP B3 ($149)
2 SM81 ($700)
2 CEMC6 ($650)
1 MXL604 ($100)
1 SM58S ($105)
1 SM57 ($99)

Do multiple occurences of the same mic count?

It's been awhile, so I don't remember WHAT we paid for all of these, and I listed these elsewhere, but my current cabinet contains:

about 8 Shure 588SD Unisphere Bs (SM58 predecessor/similar)...bought a dozen for $60, but a few had bad parts...these are what's left after I did some combining of grilles, switches, connectors, etc.
Shure BG 2.1 -- about $30
Shure BG 1.1 -- about $30
Audix Fusion 4-piece drum mic pack -- $75
AudioTechnica Midnight Blues MB1000 -- $40
Shure SM85 -- $60 WITH art tube mp pre
Shure SM10A headset, modded for guitar cab -- $50
Behringer B-2 LDC * -- $50
Radio Shack 33-3032 Kick/Tom mic -- $15
Shure SM57 -- $25 or $30
Shure SM58 -- $75 (with Samson wireless)
AudioTechnica unknown dynamic handheld -- $45
Radio Shack headset mic...live use ONLY...thank God for strong EQs on channel strips -- $30

Total for gear I actually can/do use: under $600

In my projects box, I'm pretty sure I still have an old Unisphere I, and a couple of the old Sphere-O-Dynes, one with a switch, one with a knob, both with the old screw-on connectors. I also own a couple of vintage EVs and a Shure 55 that I have yet to get cables for and try to get up and running. Anyone have good success with the 55 for recording? I know part of the appeal is that Elvis Presley used to use them on stage.

As is obvious, my cabinet tends toward low-budget dynamics for live use. I've got enough mics to outfit a complete band to get some sound into a system or down onto a tape. I'm trying to squeeze some fairly decent recording work out of them. As people have pointed out, if you can't record a great album with low-budget gear, you're not going to be able to record a great album with top-end gear.

*The B-2 has made for a great room mic...my pastor has developed an aversion to actually USING a microphone; this is OK considering we have a small congregation. The B-2 with a bit of compression captures quite a usable signal. Not perfect, but we're talking spoken word here, so not bad. I had a lav taped to the pulpit, but he kept banging into it with his cup, and the page flipping noises were horrible, hence the room mic. I've also used it for some limited vocal work (although strangely enough, from what I've got here, I keep going back to the MB1000; not a bad little vocal mic at the price at ALL), and for a bit of acoustic guitar.

I don't seem to have posted in this thread before so here goes.

2 Avenson STO-2's (just the one pair, since they come in pairs)

2 Shure SM81_LC's (for sale, I was expecting 120+ degrees of coverage per mic, and am only getting about 90- degrees(60-?). I was expecting to add some distance between mic and source, but not that much distance)

20+ Giant Squid mini mono's (great little stocking stuffers and such, I've given most of them away though)

I can't seem to shake my STO-2's. I guess it comes down to why I got them to start with. I couldn't find a recording sample I didn't like from them. While they could be better, I'm finding most other mics fall short. And with a little low end EQ bump, and rolloff, the STO-2's sound even better. A little less self noise, more bass, more transient detail is desired. But not if it means sacrificing that honest and realistic sound.

A local brass band after a little EQ loving. A hideous rehearsal room / classroom with no space to place the mics properly. And just a rehearsal. But after applying some EQ over a year after I recorded it, it's almost listen-able. Even though I was blowing chunks on trombone, sight reading treble clef after playing trumpet for most of the previous year. And Tuba the year before that. What is this slide thing used for again?

Wow- another thread that will not die. I have to update every couple of years. It's interesting to see other people's collections change over time, and what sticks around.

Like most folks here, I have number of mics I don't use much, but just can't bear to get rid of. Probably 99% of everything I record is done with:

B.L.U.E. Kiwi- main vocals, mostly male-any acoustic instrument

AKG C414-ULS-acoustic guitars, some vocals, percussion- the figure-8 for mid-side recording, with one of the Neumanns as the cardioid

Neumann KM184- Acoustic guitar, piano, ensemble stereo recording, drum overheads

Oktava MC012- the overheads when the Neumanns are in use elsewhere

Shure SM7B-some vocals, percussion, cabs

Oktava MK319- vocals, mostly female, some percussion

AKG D770- snare, voiceovers, cabs. Wherever you would use an SM57

AKG D112-kick, standup bass, backs of open cabs, voiceovers

AKG C2000B-Vocals, especially female, toms, Djembe, cabs, cabs, and more cabs

Rode NTK-vocals, male and female, some acoustic guitars

and the SONY, which is strictly for miniaturized remote recording

There- I'm good for another couple of years.-Richie

o.k.
