What do you use the EV's for & how do you like 'em?

I use it for (metal) vocals...I tried it on a guitar cab a few times and didn't care for it but on vox it's a pretty decent sounding mic...I prefer it on my voice anyhow, spoken word and vox...the lead singer in the band seems to get along with the SM58 better so YMMV.

The only con I can think of about it is several of my mic cables won't snap/lock home in it(MF cheapo's,Planet Waves ,SP Litz)...however my ProCo Ameriquad and LiveWire Quad cables work fine ( black Neutrik plug-in).

I love this thread, 'cuz it let's me bug folks about mics they have that I don't (but think I might).

So tmix--what do you think of your Kels?

Kels... Gotta luv em!

The Kels come out to play ALL the time.

The HM-1s are excellent on Violin and Mando.
I have used them to tame some peakiness on soprano sax and tin whistle too.
I have been using the HM-1s for drum kit quite often. They seem to tame the harshness of some folks cymbals while giving a little more warmth to the tom sounds.
I don't like them on voice or acoustic guitar or flute.
I have not tried them on Guitar cabinets but I imagine it would work on those cabs that are blistering bright.

The HM2-d I just recently got and have recorded some nice vocal tracks with it. It sounds very strong in the mids and lows. with a clarity on top, but no edge.
It can get a little cloudy around the 300-350 hz mark when used close. I have done some spoken word stuff with it standing 8 feet away and it sounds like you are 10 inches away.

I recorded some acoustic guitar tracks on a guitar that was a little thin sounding, and I THOUGHT it was a good match, but it NEVER fit right in the mix. I could never get it to sound right. Bad match or wrong tool, who knows. I think a pair of these on drum kit would be excellent.

Just inventoried my studio yesterday.

Dynamic (moving-coil):
1 Peavey 520i
1 Shure SM57
1 Peavey PBH
I picked up a Peavey 520i yesterday off of Craigslist. It was well reviewed here and with an initial quick and dirty test it seems to be really good for vocal recording a baritone. Off axis noise rejection is outstanding. I don't have a lot of mics or experience for comparison but I do have a Shure SM57 and the Peavey definitely out performs it for some applications.

The guy had a couple of other Peavey mics for sale (a PVM 880 & 835) but they didn't really seem like "must haves". Now that I've tried the 520i I'm interested to see how some of the other Peavey mics stack up. Specifically I'm looking at picking up a Peavey PBH for cheap. Is this mic good for anything?

Bassists have it easy... a DI box and one mic, maybe.

Drummers are screwed:

Click the image to jump to Flickr, to see model names and numbers (and a gratuitous C1000S insult).

That picture was taken just a couple months ago. I've since added a pair of N/D468s and a pair of CAD M179s, and I have 3 ribbons and 2 LDCs en route from China (via the TnC group buy).

BTW, the C1000S pair is for sale. :)

BlackLesPaul, I'm honored.

So much so that I used this, my 666th post, to say so.

I know. Now I can go in the basement and burn candles around the pentagram I have painted on the floor.

What microphone will best capture the sounds of animal sacrifice? I know, I'll use my Shure SM666! :p
