1 - Sm57
1 - Sm58
1 - MXL 990..

Hoping to get an akg perception to use instead of the mxl..or one of those mxl 960's...And some msh-10s, an mxl 604, and a shure kick mic. then i should be able to mic everything i need too haha...witht the exception of possibly one or two more sm57's/58's.

In no particular order & AUS$:
* Sony Electret 19B Condenser x3 no more than $30 each
Shure SM57 $70
** La Grange Dynamic $45
Behri XM8500 Dynamic x2 $80 for pair
Primo DM-260 Sub minature mic (late 60's?) x2 found
***MH1 $30
Realistic Stereo Electret $5
Hi Mike DM201 - crystal element found
E-Tunes MIC-102 Wireless. $20
** Behri C1 Large cond. $60
How's that for a mixed bag of cheapies?
Some of them, *, are quite useful given the right circumstances.

Wow this thread is STILL alive. Crazy. Its like 5 years old.
My mic list is completely different. I think I have maybe oe of those ones from the original post heh.
Same ole topics around here though... "B1 or SM57?"
Neither! Pimp your grandma and buy something GOOD! ;)

I've got around 20 mics...but pretty much all of them are chinese rip-offs, but I like them :)

At the moment I have:

SM58
Rode NT1-A

For the longest time I only had the SM58 and recorded acoustic gtr and vox through it, which was fun to say the least, but I didn't know any better :D

Just ordered myself a pair of Naiant MSH-2s so looking forward to trying them out. Up next, I hope to get an SM57 (cuz every aspiring engineer needs a 57!), and a pair of small condensers (depending on how much I like/get on with the naiants... if they'll do me for a while then I probably won't bother).

Hmmmmm...

Dynamics
SM57 x3
SM58
Sennheiser e835
Blue Ball
EV RE-18
EV DS-35 (2 - Matched Pair)
AT Pro2 AX x2
CAD KBM 12
Mystery Cheapo Dynamics -- almost a drawer Full! They keep coming free with mic stands...

Condensors
Rode NT-1 (Aussie)
Nady SCM 900 x2 (bought for $99 each in 1999 when that seemed like a "never to be replicated super fabulous deal!!!!)
MXL V63m
MXL V67g
MCA SP-1
AKG C-1000 (Austrian)
AT Pro70 (Lav)
Blue Bluebird
Naiant MSH-2 (Pair)
CAD GXL-3000
CAD/ASTATIC CTM1000a (Pair)
MXL 960 (on the way)

Other Stuff
Realistic PZM x2
Cascade Fathead II Ribbon.
Carbon element (old phone) mic built into a PBR Tall Boy -- killer for harp! And man does it look cool.

Since my original post, 2 years ago, my mic collection has a few additions...and there isn't an edit feature for my old post...so here goes with an updated list:

1 - Neumann TLM103
1 - Rode K2 (Telefunken Tube)
1 - Nady RSM-2 Ribbon Mic
1 - ACM-3, given to me because of sagging ribbon...which I've since fixed.
1 - Red5 Audio RVD1 Kick Drum mic
2 - HRM-10, Ribbon Mics from original group buy
2 - Oktava MK-012
4 - Red5 Audio RVD9 Dynamic Snare / Tom Mics
4 - Rode NT5's (2 matched pairs)
8 - SM57
8 - SM58

My long term project is now pretty much complete!

About ten years ago, I got some good advice from David Josephson. To paraphrase, he suggested that to be "well-rounded" in terms of experience in using mikes, one should be familiar with at least one representative example of each of the major types of mike used for music recording:
1) a dynamic cardioid mike
2) a multi-pattern condenser
3) a small diaphragm cardioid condenser
4) a true pressure omni mike, and
5) a ribbon mike.

So, after a couple of sales this last week to allow purchase of two ribbon mikes, my list includes:

Shure SM-57 Unidyne III (x2)
AT 4050/CM5
Shure SM-81 (x2) modified by Scott Dorsey before he sold them
Shure SM-80 capsules (x3) plus one that doesn't work well
EV RE-55 (x2)
beyerdynamic M130 (x2)

I also have an AKG D-19 and an AKG D24E that need repair, if possible.

I like having them in pairs, so I still think I'll probably pick up another AT 4050/CM5 at some point.

Cheers,

Otto

Added a Sony C-38b to the locker today. I can hardly wait as I have a project already picked out for it. Of course since the intended use is for female vocals, we'll have to see whether it really works -- or not -- but I have high hopes:D Anyone used one of these for female vocals? Music style is Roots/Americana and an alto voice.

My 1st Sony mic is/was an original C-38B. I've used it on vocals, horns, all manner of percussion, guitar amps, and piano. Very useful and very nice.

I understand that this is an older C-38b (as opposed to the current re-issue). AFAIK, there's no difference between the older mics and the re-issues. Should be a different sound than my other better LD mics which run more towards the German model. BTW Rick, I really enjoyed your CD that I bought from you off this site - nice stuff!

About the only sonic differences between old and new examples that I can imagine would come from the condition of the capsule and whatever might age less than gracefully in the electronics. For what it's worth, I have always liked the Sony LD mic characteristics better than most of the Neumanns I have encountered. The one exception was a particular U-67 that was on loan from a friend for a number of years.

Glad you like the CD.
