Wish List:

2-Senn 421
1-RE20
1-SM7
1-U87
I can move the SM7 from my wish list up to my owner list... Just got an SM7 off Ebay for $250.00 and it is awsome!

Yeah, its a really great mic. It has about become my most used microphone. My friends who record all want to borrow it so it is almost always in use. A relative bargain at that. :D

Welcome to the SM7 owners club. This has become my favorite all-around mic in my studio. I love it on vocals running in to my Neotek Series I channel strip, and it sounds awesome on guitar with my Ampeg Jet paired with an e609 Silver. You just need a TON of gain for this mic to really speak.

Cheers,
Zach

My Mics

I too am in the process of growing my mic cabinet. What I have so far:

2 Shure SM57's $89 each
2 Shure SM58's $89 each
1 CAD E-100 $400
1 Rode NT1 $200
1 Studio Projects T3 $400
1 Studio Projects C1 $200
1 Studio Projects C3 $300
2 Oktava MK219's $90 each
Audio Technica AT822 stereo $220

My Oktavas are currently being upgraded by Michael Joly and I hope to have them back in a few weeks sounding awesome. I am also looking at a matched pair of Peluso CEMC6 mikes for acoustic instrument recording and later some Shure SM81's

I'm curious. What does the Oktava upgrade consist of and what does it cost?

1 SM57
1 SM58
1 AKG D112
3 AT Pro37r
1 SP C1

I did my first demo with these, but now that I'm using my studio to record others I needed to add better mics to give clients more variety and better results... so I gotta update my list:

3 Shure SM57
1 Shure SM58
1 AKG D112
1 Beyerdynamic M201TG
1 Sennheiser MD421
1 Sennheiser e609s
2 Oktava MK012
3 AT Pro37r
1 AT 4040
1 SP C1
1 Rode NTK

Next on the list for mics is a mulit-pattern (T3, 4050, or similar). Then it's making a matched pair of one of my LDC's (4040 or NTK?), and soon after a ribbon (Nady's got some new ones coming). I'd also and another MD421 or two. After that I'll likely upgrade the c1 to something more serious - like a lower end Soundelux, a GT, or maybe a BLUE mic. We'll see...tis a year or three down the road before that'll all happen

I recently put a small site up describing some of my Oktava work at www.oktavamod.com

I'm in the process of collecting testimonials. I don't have permission to attribute the quote below yet so I'll just post it anonomously. The writer is a professional voice over talent and engineer.

OK, I'll play:

"Vocal" Mics (large condensors)--
Neumann TLM170R
A-T 4060 tube mic
AKG C414 B-ULS
Groove Tubes GT55 FET

"Acoustic Guitar" Mics (small condensors)--
Neumann KM-184 (2; sequential pair)
Alesis/GT AM40 tube mics (2)
Oktava/Sound Room MC012
Earthworks QTC-1

"Drum Kit" Mics--
E-V RE20 on kick
A-T Pro37R (2) on toms
BLUE Ball on toms
Also use the same Oktava MC012 (snare) and KM-184s (overheads)

Miscellaneous Mics
SM-57 (good for guitar cabs, though the E-V RE20 is better)
SM-58

The sleeper here is the AM40 pair. These sound just great on acoustic guitar. Current GT equivalent model lists for about $800, I think.

Mine is a project studio specializing in singer/songwriter work. The strategy has been to get cost-effective but well-regarded mics as much as possible... plus the occasional impulse buy. Next purchase is an Audix D6 for kick; maybe a second AKG C414 someday. Realistically I should be able to do most anything I need to do with this batch of mics.

New list...changing weekly.

Sm57X2
Samson S12
AKG 14 buls
ADK A51
Rode NT5X2
Sen MD421
Sen e604X3

Probably get an NTK this week ir all goes well

Oktava MK219 Upgrade

Well I finally had some time to sit down with the Michael Joly upgraded Oktava MK219's. First of all the Mics are alot quieter in comparison to before the upgrades. Second of all the frequency balance on the Acoustic guitar is incredible. It's like he took a wad of cotton off of the capsule. I still have a lot of testing to do but in a nutshell, before the mics sounded like crap and now they sound fantastic. Well worth the low price for the upgrade.

Audio Technica AT3035
MXL 604 (coming in this week)
EV N/D 767a
Audio Spectrum 420 (got it free with a $20 onstage mic stand)
Superlux ECO88S (coming in this week, getting it free with my 604)

I know the last two don't count as mics, but hay got to inflate my totals a little, hehehe.

Added another AT-4049a (so I now have a pair), another pair of Beyer MCE93s and a Neumann Gefell M582h tube mic with an M7 capsule. I'm intrigued by the Michael's modded Oktavas. I think I'm going to have to buy a 219 and send it in. Looks way cool. :D
