All of those just to record guitar???! Jeez, do you wanna donate one to me in order to record mine :D

jnorman, those are some nice mics you've got there! And since you have the one AT capsule I don't have I'm curious how you think it compares to the other small capacitor mics...

Well, I just got the Schoeps, AEA and CAD. I'm selling the 184s and 103. Dunno, I might even sell the 149 - the CAD is really incredible.

basper - the 4051s are very nice mics, with a very clear and open kind of sound, sort of like a mixture of a dpa 4011 and a sennheiser mk40. very uncolored compared to km184s. i went through 3 pairs of 184s over the years, and it seemed like i was always fighting to get the right sound out of them. the schoeps are probably the best of the group for middle-distance ORTF main pair, but a little low-end heavy as close mics. the c480s are generally my favorites for close micing acoustic instruments (winds, horns, strings), but the at4051s are what i use on pedal harp (working on the 4th CD for flute/harp duo, "rosewynde") and piano (also doing a CD for a lady who has a brand new 7'4" bosendorfer - simply amazing!) the little DPAs see action both as a main pair for small ensemble in a nice space, and as close spaced pair for some solo applications in the studio.

Mine's still very very modest...ok ok, its pretty basic and not that great...

(2) Oktava MC012
(2) Oktava MK219
(4) Shure SM57
(1) Sennheiser e609 Silver
(1) MXL v67G
(1) Audio Technica ATM25
(1) EV 635 (just won on eBay, should have by the end of the week)

Plus a bunch of lousy handheld dynamics that I've accumulated over the years (random Samson, Shure, AKG, AT, etc)

I also have a SansAmp Bass Driver DI for bass, but its not a mic so I don't know why I'm including it here.

If you feel like being impressed, cruise on over to Steve Albini's site, Electrical Audio. I go there when I feel the urge to drool a whole bunch.

I added:

(1)V67G
(2)603S
(1)SM57

Im about to wire a PZM to the ceiling for a talkback in the drum room.

MemoGtr,
Yeah, I'm a little embarassed, but not enough to start pruning the herd.
I've been recording for fun since about 1961, when my Dad brought home a Victor wax-cylinder recorder, but my first commercial project, a CD of my Jewish band, was just released this past March. We recorded and mixed it right here in my basement studio and had it mastered by a great local guy. We might sell enough copies to pay me back for the mechanical licenses and CD duplication!
I've not investigated the process of sample-posting, but I can e-mail MP3 samples if you're interested...

:)
hey
how big is your basement?? do you have any pictures of it??

just today while i was tracking a nice local band (not that i actually have the skills or complete gear to do it but i offered it to them) i started to think about wax-cylinders, how were/are those things??

sure i wanna hear some of that, if you could email some samples that'd be great

thanks

Well, I just got our new website up, and it includes some MP3s from our CD that I recorded with [some of] those mics above.
It's at:

http://www.nigunorchestra.com

Of interest to the microphone thread is the cut "Moe the Schmoe Makes Love". All of the voices, the clarinet, and the claves were recorded in one take at one time with one mic - the AEA R44CNE. For balance we just tried it until we got everybody positioned correctly - and no one was closer than 4 feet away from the mic!

1-d112
1-e609
2-mid of the road at
1-457 they dont make anymore love it tho
2-58's

Just building my studio big mic purchase next year hopefuly.... if the is wife willing to let me spend more money.
