Do it right or dont do it
Hey there, a band is asking me to distort some parts of the vocal track to soun like a guy speaking from a megaphone. I'm wondering how to achieve such effect. Does somebody know how to do that?

Here's an example:
Tom Waits - Chocolate Jesus

Thanks.

eq...high pass filter and "fish" around 3500 or so. That will get you in the right direction. Guitar Rig has a perfect preset for that under "FX & Vocal" window.

Try a band pass filter set to around 1khz. Keep this narrow so that you are retaining a range of only 100 to 200 hz. Like Len Hallock says, sweep around a bit until you get the right effect.

Or you could get a megaphone, and just have him sing through that. That'll probably be the best way of getting the effect. :P

Just curious... what kind of microphone will be the best one to do such task? I mean, even using low volume it's something really unusual. :D

I've never tried it, but the first thing I would do is put a bit of distance between the vocalist and the mic. Have the vocalist singing into the megaphone on one end of the room, with an omni on the other side? That'd probably pick up the megaphone reverb well.
