Measuring Tascam Ms-16 Output Voltage and Rec/Play Cards

PS: MAKE SURE that you number ALL channel cards in their respective channel with a sharpie BEFORE pulling any out. You will be sorry if you don't.

Have you already tried recording 1k tones at 1.23v (if you're running it balanced) from the mixer or an oscillator to see what you get back out of it ?
ie; you need to really verify that it's not the meters acting all weird. Defeat the DBX for now when printing tones.

Hey man...
the #5 post says that I've swapped it
and it stays with the card.
They were are all marked prior to purchase.
I have tried Recording through it.
It registers the Input signal, but as soon
as I monitor in Repro during Recording,
it goes back down to -10/-15db.
I have boiled the possibilities down
to it being the Channel 6 card itself.
I am located in Los Angeles, CA
That seems like a fair price for the Cards.
I would like to try least 1 for Ch. 6
And then repair it somewhere down the line as a spare.
I've thought about Jim Williams.
I bet he can hot rod an MS-16
to sound killer:D
I calculated it out $1200 for all 16 Channels.

So, do you have an entire MS-16
as a spare, or is it running?
If it's a parts deck, would sell
any other stuff?

I am sorry that I missed that you had already swapped out the cards.
RE Jim Williams, yes, I have known a couple guys that have had him upgrade their cards and the consensus is is that the machine sounds like a MCI when he's done. I think he does get around 75 bucks per card so you are right.
Are you close enough to him that you could take your machine to him to bring back into spec ?


The second mahine I have is just a spare for parts. Somehow, or as I was told, a family of mice got into it and chewed up the wireing harnesses. It's looks like it too. If I had a spare couple of months I could probably make new ones, but I don't. I think the previous owner was out your way somewhere so he took it all apart and sent it to me in about 5 boxes. I will probably just keep it for parts just in case, but the head stack on my #1 machine is perfect so I do have a spare headstack that someone may need someday.

:o I am also really sorry that I did not know your correct name but it's good to know what it is now and I won't do that again.

Oh, yeah, Danny...years ago I plugged a channel card into it with the card offset on the extender card by one pin...cooked a bunch of stuff. Tried to get it going after a time with Ethan's help (evm1024) but it was over my head...logic circuitry had been damaged. I ended up selling it to him and he go it all going swell awhile ago which is what I was hoping for. Still minty and still truckin' good or better than new by this time.

Hey man, don't worry about it.
People always call me Randy.
I'm just surprised not too many
people know about him.
He died in 1982, probably why.

I need several miscellaneous parts
for my machine.
If you decide to sell any parts, hit me up:D
Man, there are hardly any people
broking down their MS-16's for parts.
I never see any parts on Ebay, CL, etc

If I get the money together, sending
the cards out to Jim sounds like
a really cool idea.
 
So... what should I do about Channel 5 and 6?
What would cause it to lose power like that?
What could some other factors be?
Diodes?
IC's?
Transistor's/FET's?

Channel 6 doesn't work in Sync and Repro.
It has some Output; about -10db to -15db
Channel 5 works in Repro and Record(Monitoring in Repro mode)
but not Sync whatsoever. No signal response in Sync.
Both Channels work in Input Mode.

I just received my Relays.
Great deal.
One thing is strange though,
I took off the metal cover and saw that
both the Record and Sync Relays are G2V-282P 24v.
The Manual says the the Sync Relay is G2V and the
Record is MR62 24S.
That's wierd.
 
IT WORKED!!!
The Relays were the problem.
Switching from Repro to Sync is perfect
and the Levels are always constant.

With the main problem gone, there are still
a couple other problems to take care of.
Such as Channels 5 and 6(I'm going to replace them)
And now there is this problem with the Channel 13
Rec/Play Amp Card Terminal.
It doesn't function in Repro, but it does in Sync.
Where would a possible culprit be for the Terminals?:confused:
Maybe the Repro pins that connect to the Edge Connectors?
It is definitely not the Card, it stays with the Terminal.

And another problem came up where I
accidentally pulled up one solder port
where the Relay pins go through and
now when I apply solder, it just turns
into a ball instead of the pyramid shape.
And it barely comes in contact with the PCB board.
The consequence is that it now does
not function in Repro, but it does in Sync.
Is there a way to fix this?
Or will I have to replace the Card?

At least I am close:)

HEYYYYYY! That's GREAT news! :D

Okay...

I agree to just purchase spare cards for 5 and 6...pianodano's offer is quite reasonable (Danny you can send me my cut when able :laughings:), keep the malfunctioning cards and make that a longer term project to fix those.

With channel 13 you need to just start tracing it out. You'd need to make sure that the relay is getting the signal to kick over. If there is a bent pin or a broken solder joint that'll cause all sorts of problems. If you can get to the back of the MOBO you can touce up the solder joints for each pin on slot 13 and see if that does it.

And for the solder joint, can you put up a closeup picture of the situation? Usually what I do is scrape off the green coating a little way back on the trace and solder a piece of a tail from a new resistor or capacitor to extend the trace past where the "pad" or "land" got damaged and then solder the component lead to that. I dealt with that on my 58...did the same thing.

Lemme see if I can find links to a couple threads that might help...

Fixed Channel 13.:cool:
The Ch-13 Repro connector cable was undone
on the Mother Board PCB.
Very relieved.
Just finished all 16 Amp Card Relays.
Not a glitch, except for those other 3 Cards.
So, the last problems are:
1) Channel 5 doesn't work in Sync.
2) Channel 6 hardly works at all.
3) Channel 9 doesn't work in Repro.
-Because the Solder Joint was burnt off.
I'm not sure if I have a camera
to take a picture, I'll look.
Could you explain to me again
how to fix the solder joint?
