Gone
It's been a long damn while since I've posted anything. You will probably notice that this is just a little bit different than the stuff I posted nearly a year ago ( http://www.mp3.com/slacker ).

If it sounds like a mess, that's because it is. Picture me, at work, sitting in front of a computer day after day. I look out the window and I see all my friends running around with guitars and drumsets and having so much fun. But alas, I cannot join then...or maybe I don't want to. That is what this is.

Me vs. Me

Impressions and criticisms welcome. Be warned that the first minute or so of this thing has some nasty computer bass that my woofers had some trouble with...I ended up having to tone it way down so it's not going to be harmfull or anything...just a warning. You won't hear it with headphones.

This song will be at the above address for a time and then will move to mp3.com if I decide it's done. If the link doesn't work, try finding it at mp3.com/slacker, thanks.

damn......damn......I wanted to bitch so bad about the intro.....then damn...1:02 or something...damn.....pissed when that part ended....damn....wanted to get pissed at the next section...then heard the barely audible multiple blues licks...damn...then that funky up front generic thing on top of them....damn........I've listened three times.....I'm gonna listen some more.....damn.....is it art or is it a canny rebuff?....damn.....am I being conned or cornered?....damn....must....play....again........gibs

I've listened to a lot of people's music here but haven't commented on much. I really like'd that a lot it was pretty amazing. I can't compare it to anything because I've never heard anything quite like that, although I think that if maybe the Butthole Surfers hadn't lost their creative edge then they could maybe put out something quality like that. It's like a John Waters movie keeping you at the edge of your seat with the suprises at every turn. Its avante garde, but not in a pretentious pussy artsy fartsy kind of way, it had balls. That is really not seen much these days.
I listened to Adity as well and like that too. Great stuff I want to hear more!!

arrrrgggghhhhhhhhohmy

Totally psychotic, although I was strangely drawn to it. Interesting use of silence.

silence

That's friggin great Slack! Really dig the guitar sounds, get's pretty Pink Floydish but interesting start to end. What are you using to generate the synth sounds?

As our Pensacola Pal would say: Three Thumbs Up!
Hey Slack! Great stuff. Besides the very clear Pink Floyd influence I also hear some of S8-N's ideas in there. That bass in the intro might be a hair too thick. I'd gauge it against how the 20th anniversary edition of Dark Side of the Moon sounds in that heartbeat sequence. That synth lead tone in the satanic section is growing on me slowly but it's got a ways to go. The orchestral hit patch worked somewhat. I don't even try to use that one anymore. Very comforting transition from that deep-in-drstawl-territory mix of those clips played against each other (weak fading gong/slappy spound/squeaky wheel) to the blues thing at the end. Interesting creative choice keeping the volume of that last section low relative to the rest of the tune. Somehow I feel this was a conscious decision to make the guitars at the end sound distant.
LI Slim- that wasn't silence, just a very quiet passage to set you up for that headbanging section like Jethro Tull did on Thick as a Brick and Mr. Bungle did on Mr. Bungle.

Drippy faucet, from outer space of course, Then bam, we get a taste, great taste, orchestra trys to make it stop, but ends up making a fool of itself. Door slams, back in the machine room, with a machine that sounds like the Mummy.

All that's left is music from another room.

Slack says it all!!!

Thanks to all for listening!

Gibs: Yeah I know that the trombone incident is still fresh in our memories, but this time I'm not foolin around :)

rats: Thanks. Interesting comment about the butthole surfers because I've really never listened to them. Although I do remember as a kid listening to a song that went like "the beach is nothing but a fish toilet" or something...maybe it had a lasting effect :)

LI: My first instincts were to crank everything up and keep it all in the yellow...but then I said what the fuck. Quiet works sometimes.

Emeric: I've been playing around with fruity loops. Most of the synth sounds are just hacked samples....like the big low sound at the end is a flute sample stretched out and delayed just right as to create a pulsating feel. The creaky cracky shit...I can't remember exactly where I got that stuff...they were samples of doors opening and closing and I just wanked em until they sounded right.

Doc: Yeah talking with S8-N has opened my mind up to heavier sounds...but he'd laugh at this number no doubt :) It's funny that people are mentioning Pink Floyd. Yes I deliberately borrowed some ideas from Welcome To The Machine...but I actually got the idea for the noise from my recent discovery of Whitehouse ( mp3.com/whitehouse )...I can't stop listening to that shit! The orchestral thing was kind of for fun...see I wrote the first half of this song a few weeks ago, and I was just playing around with idea of synths and shit because I've never really used them (besides regular drum machine software). I probably shouldn't have left that part in there but I needed a break of some sort. Good call on the bass guitar...I fucking HATE trying to get a good bass sound...what you hear there is the effort of abotu 2-3 hours of adjusting and readjusting. CRAP. Yes the guitars at the end were meant to be distantish....the idea is: my heart is with the blues, my anger is in hard rock, but my stupid body is stuck in the machine room. Kinda dumb but it is what it is :)

GT: "All that's left is music from another room." You got it man.

Ok, to recap I've been playing with fruity loops and some free drum/noise software from the net. The guitar is all solid POD into my cheap Ensoniq soundcard (YUCK)....except for the "doinky" sounds which were done with an AutoVol effect. The bass was recorded with a SansAmp Bass Driver into an ART tube pre into the Ensoniq. The child's voice at the end is the 5 year old saying "computer"....and the "cow" sounds are that sample slowed way down. The blues bits at the end were just a quick "one take" recording. I actually recorded two solos and was trying to decide which to use, when it occurred to me that using both added to the feel more. The death at the end was done using a couple instances of Fasoft's Pitch Shift plugin. And in case you hadn't guessed it, the entire thing was mixed with n-Track.

Thanks guys!

Well, Slack... this is truly a bizzare, yet killer mix of sounds and music. "Me vs. Me" wreaks of creativity.
It started with the feel of being stalked by the alien in "Predator", to music that sounds like The Rollins Band on crack, with a little Boston Pops tossed in.
Then you dropped us in a machine and finished us off with Leon Redbone on acid. At least, that's what "I" heard! ;)
This one's a keeper, bro. The weed smokers will be bongin' to this one for sure!
Excellent, excellent, excellent!

Buck

hey slack...

Sounded to me like Tool vs. Primus. I like it though. Keep on playin buddy!

That's it.

Derek

Hey Slack,

Really dug the feel on this tune. You and doc have inspired me to try some experimental stuff myself.

Did this idea come from a dream? Just curious.

What did you dream? It's alright, we told you what to dream.

Kinda like a hearing test(do you hear it in the left ear or the right ear?).....until it blows your ears all to hell! Started diggin' the heavy metal stuff until the orchestra decided to bust in......but the blues....that was GREAT!! (ya sure this wasn't just an exercise in dynamics and digital headroom?)

How about I critique the criticisms?

As always, Doc was dead on with the Mr. Bungle reference... Like 'em or hate 'em... They change the way you see music.
Rats mentioned Butthole surfers... I made a reference to them while reviewing one of Meshuggahs tunes... Its all tru. I guess anything noisy, experimental, and slightly annoying will remind us of the 'hole's...
I think this is a huge leap for U slak... When I listened to your other stuff I thought "This is a guy searching for his niche"... When I hear this I think "This is a guy who knows what the fuck is trying to do..." There is a big difference... I think that most musicians never really know what the fuck they are doing or why they are doing it... This song might be the opening of a door for you that might make all of the difference... I could be wrong, but I think you might have found your calling.
I have been wrong before, but I doubt if I am.
This sounds like Slackmaster2000.

Good job, buddy.

I love that part in the middle where it sounds like the music is a piece of paper you ball up and throw away... and then there's silence. This is brilliant from beginning to end. I liked the guitar sounds in the heavier part... and that section had just enough sythesized stuff to throw me off and make it extremely original, without overkill on the noises.

This reminds me like a soundtrack of some of those short movies that you would see in a class on abstract filmaking, or some of the stuff that comes on TV at 4:12AM, but maybe that's because it's 4:12AM and I'm watching stuff on TV with it muted, and it fit right in as the soundtrack.

Great job.

Buck: thanks for giving it a listen. I'm pretty proud that this thing turned out so well since it's really the first time I've tried anything like this. It's definately a step forward for me because a couple years ago I would have HATED *any* music with samples and weird effects.

sims531: Tool YES. The "dink dink dink" sound in the beginning is definately tool. I don't quite hear the primus, but I wish I could play bass like les. :)

Brad: no dream this time. It's cool that you want to try some experimental stuff too....the biggest benefit to this BBS is that I've been inspired to try new things. I think we'll all become better musicians and recorders because of our experiences here....and I'd bet that Doc has changed us all the most. You can't possible top WGOMM though :) I was just listening to that again a couple days ago...it's my favorite moment on the comp CD.

MAC2: thanks for listening. Sorry about the ears but....mission accomplished :)

S8-N: yeah Mr. Bungle has been an influence on me since you and matthew turned me on to them. I still hate Mike Patton, and I will always hate him. Thanks for the compliments. I'm not sure if this will be my niche...I'm not sure if I want a niche though it might be unavoidable. It is definately more me than the other stuff I've done (except for Adity). And I approached this project more openly without worrying about whether it fit into the box. Thanks man.

Jon X: the heavy guitar part didn't have any synthesized stuff except for the stupid orchestra hit, which I'm starting to regret. The strange high-pitched sounds are just clean blues riffs whacked out by an autovol. Thanks for listening man!

Heh, thanks Gidge. I had forgotten about that thread. I had two or three newbies email me about it asking if I was picking on them...and I had to appologize and explain that it was all just in good fun. :)
