is this a good mic pre to use with a royer 121. i know many have suggested great river pres to go with my ribbon mic... this seems to be a "lower end" great river, if there is such a thing. it mentions something about a "70s" tone to the pre. is that going to be a problem with the 121? ive always thought that a pre needs to be pretty tansparent when joined with a ribbon. then again, i dont know what they mean by 70s tone... if anyone knows anything, let me know!!

I've used the ME1-NV before, but I'm NOT sure how well it teams-up with the Royer 121... I have a MP2-NV and it's a great preamp. Also I'm not sure, but I "think" the ME1-NV has a different power supply than the MP2-NV.

"low-end" Great River - that's hilarious! :D

The ME1-NV is exactly half of a MP2-NV.... hardly "low-end".....

which is why i put it in quotes... the website describes it as a more affordable option, something easly attainable for home studios. i know what it is, my question was, would pairing it with a royer 121 be a good combo...
christ all mighty. dont jump all over me.

From Fletcher's site:
GREAT RIVER ME-1NV Mic Pre

Identical audio components as the MP-2NV. Not similar, exactly the same.

* Audio and meter boards interchangeable with MP-2NV components.
* Internal power supply, externally switchable to 110/220.
* Rack mount kits available soon.
* 18ga cold rolled steel chassis. 3/16" milled aluminum face plate.
* Powder coated metal parts.

Power supply is downsized to fit and not cause noise problems,
yet still more than adequately power one channel.

Based on the preamps found in old Neve™ 1073 modules, Great River added a twist. While the circuit is basically the same, different components were chosen for a lower noise floor, an extended frequency response and better bass clarity. While the unit sounds similar to a 1073, the user experiences a larger, more open sound field which is especially helpful if you are storing your audio in the digital domain..

Working with Dan Kennedy at Great River, and the folks at Sowter transformers, we came up with a special, custom transformer specifically for the Great River MP-1NV & MP-2NV "Mercenary Editions". The idea was to build a transformer that would have all the "size" and "thunder" that you would find in the pre-amp of an original Neve™ 1073, but without the 'haze' and 'mush' that can accumulate when you run a whole bunch of tracks through a 1073
That being said, I've used the ME1-NV with both an AEA 84 ribbon, and a Beyer M160. It was excellent for both...........

then i have a feeling it will pair nicely with my royer 121.
thanks

It's likely the reason it's described as "affordable" is because it is single channel, making it somewhat more accessible price-wise.

now, im not a budget man, i believe in spending money for good gear, but... is there anything else out there that is comparible but maybe in the 500-800 price range? or is my best bet to go with the ME-1NV...???

IMNSHO, no there isn't -- get the GR.......

The impedence matching on the GR makes it a highly capable match for ribbons as well as most other mics.

borntoplease... I haven't used ALL of them, but from the preamps I have used... I agree with Blue Bear Sound (get the GR).

The only thing you might want to consider is a used Avalon M5 (around $900).

I own both (ME-1NV and M5) and these do EVERYTHING I need.

great river low end? lol!

it is a friggin kick ass mic pre that will rock yer dick into the dirt! get it...you wont regreat it. :)

Mercenary is having a holiday special on the Speck 5.0 for $700 (normally $850. http://www.mercenary.com/speckmicpre50.html

I know Fletcher likes these things a lot.

Holy shit, I'm buying a new computer this Christmas dedicated to recording or I'd snap one of these Specks up.

I've done some pretty serious listening tests that included the GR stuff as well as John Hardy and a few others. My thoughts at the time were that the Sytek comes pretty dangerously close in overall sound quality -- but it is a different sound, obviously.

In the 5-800 price range, I think the Old School Audio can hang with the Great River any day of the week ... and in many cases I'd prefer them. In that price range, the OSA stuff just really obviously strikes me as having a unique personality and vibe to it.

Well, not totally unique. :D I suppose OSA would be to API what the NV stuff would be to a Neve. But it's a very pleasant and convincing take on the API. Quite a bargain at any price, as they'd say.

I agree with Chessrock...The Old School Audio stuff is very nice! The closest to the Great River's personality is the L3{that I've tried} however you don't have the loading option..the C's are very good on drums like snare and kik and I really like the A's on overheads ect now Im useing the G/R on toms in drum tracking..the L3 is still relitively new to me so Im still gettting its "vibe" so to speak..Loved it on vox on with a 4060 so far and it was nice with a KSM44 on acous. guitar..The only thing is buying the rack and power sup. once you do that...great pres for about 500.00 bucks a channel..At this point Great River,OSA,API,Hardy and Avalon ect. I guess its all good :)
