Md8 Errors

Having searched high and low for information and eventually finding this site, which proved to be a great help, I still find myself at a loss as to what to do.

I purchased a Yamaha MD8 from ebay in the knowledge that "error 80" shows up every time a disk is put in, mainly because it was going for the same price as a mixer with less features anyway.

I have attempted to remove dust by vacuum/hairdyer on cool setting with flow directed into a small nozzle/bike pump/anything that makes air move and this has not changed the situation. I read somewhere that this is normally the problem.

However, while searching on this forum, I have found information telling me error 80 means the "magnetic head has not dropped", or something similar.

This is the strange bit; the md8 can read information from the minidisc, for example how much music is stored on there already (I am using an audio MD just for testing purposes), but as soon as I attempt to write the TOC after erasing the disk, or similar, it will show up Error 80 again.

It is as if the unit can read fine, but cannot write. Any ideas? Is the magnetic head the problem?

Thanks in advance.

Apologies - just to let you know, when I actually try and play the minidisc, the counter will read zero for a few seconds, then go back to show total time of disc.

ive also had disc errors showing up on my machine, tho not the one you have (80)? did you mean 08?

i think im right to say that cleaning, vacuuming, even contact cleaner spraying isnt going to solve your problem. my understanding is that these types of errors are in the data processing bit (im no teccie at all, the computer bit is all i know it as) and it may need looking at

be wary when these kind of errors occur. i love the machine but ive lost faith in mine as it throws uop error 06 and stuff from time to time. ive had two great tracks fucked by faults occuring for no apparent reason.

further developments...

The error was indeed "Error 80". Having opened up the machine, I found that a piece of plastic dust shielding had become wedged into the magnetic head gear system and this was the reason it was not moving with the laser and therefore showing up the error.

However, in trying to "fix" it before I realised that this was the problem, I probably bashed around the magnetic head quite a lot. It doesn't look damaged or bent and it seems to be in calibration with the laser.

The error has not come up since I took out the plastic. However, the unit doesn't seem to record. I will "Erase Disc" or record a track and the machine will seem to do it fine, without any errors while doing it or when it is finished. However, it is simply not making a difference to the disc. After erasing the disc, for example, making sure the TOC is written, I will turn it off and then on again and the unit will show the disc exactly how it was before - for example 21 tracks, or whatever.

So far I have only been able to test this on audio minidiscs that have already been written - I expect on a hifi minidisc deck. Would this make a difference? The disks are definitely NOT physically write protected. Perhaps the laser is not heating the disc to the required temperature?

I do not want to buy some data minidiscs until I know the unit is working, as I live in the UK and they are fairly expensive and difficult to buy, unless they are in bulk of an internet site.

Does anyone have any ideas as to what the problem might be? Is it just because I am using audio MDs which already have music on them?

As you can see, I am still relatively new to the technology, but I am picking things up fast as I go along. :)

Thanks in advance.

Hello? Yamaha Service? I need an RMA number to send my MD8 for repair!

Pls see the Yamaha website for contacting the service dept.
;)

Google your little ass off for MD8 info. And as stated before check out the yamaha site. The MD8 while being a great machine is also a very delicate one. YOU MUST BE VERY GENTLE WITH IT. I get the occasional error I usually just eject the disc, turn off the unit and try again. Also someone gave me this SUPER tip with it....use PAUSE instead of STOP whenever possible...causes a lot less fuckups. You have to get a data disc and see what happens with it. Are you certain that you are using rewritable discs? There are some old write once discs floating around out there BEWARE. Have you tried using a diffferent minidisc?

Sorry!

Once that magnetic head is damaged or broken, the minidisc will read but not write. Unless you can "finess" that magnetic head back into working/position, you'll require a service technician/replacement md mech.
