MD as preamp

If I have no mixer to do my homerecording, can I use my MD as a preamp (I have only one mic)?

Your MD will not work as a preamp. If everything going into it was at line-level, it would be fine. But to record from a mic, you need to get the mic level to line-level. In order to do this, you will need some form of pre-amp. If money is an issue, check out the little Berhinger mixers. There are a couple of them for under a hundred bucks.
 
Well, isn't that just to cool. I guess you can use it as a pre. I don't know what quality you will get from it though. By the way, is this what you are using to record to, or are you just trying to use it to pass a signal to another recorder.
 
I want to pass the signal from my MD to my computer (i've got n-Track). Earlyer I used my hifi-amp as preamp, it had a mic-in. Now I bought a new (better) one but without mic-in. So I had to look for a knew solution. But I'm looking forward to buy a real mixer as soon as I have the money.
 
Only one other suggestion I can offer to you is if you have digital I/O on your sound card to use that instead of the anolog. Your sound quality will be a little better.

Also something that just came to mind, you will only be able to control the volume going into the MD. Make sure that you get the strongest possible signal going in without clipping. and then likewise in your computer.

yeah, what your talking about IS possible, but your better off getting a real mic pre (besides the mixer your getting). The amps on the md8 arent super great, and they'll leave a bit to be desired.

Stupid question, but I kind of have to ask it. Because english is not my first language, I didn't understand the word "clipping". What does it mean?

Clipping?

To begin with, I am not an expert in electronics to explain exactly what clipping is. I can tell you that I know what it is and how to correct it when I encounter it.

Clipping is when the signal is set to loud for the circuit is is being passed through to handle it. This causes the signal to get distorted.

You should have a clipping indicator on your MD. If the signal is to strong, There should be an indicator light to let you know it. I know my MD does.

I hope this helps. If not, or if my post is not correct, maybe someone else here can make things a little clearer.
