Maybe a dumb question about SoundFonts

I am just learning about digital recording vs. analog, and just began reading about SoundFonts. I understand that Soundfonts are samples or patches (I think), and that they are accessed through a sound card, i.e. a Soundblaster.

How might Soundfonts be used in a recording project, lets say in conjunction with an M1 and other synths going through an Omni Studio setup?

TIA

If you have a Sound Blaster Live it's basically just like using any card's onboard synth, except that you first need to load the sound set. In addition to the normal GM sound set that's on the card, you now have the Sound Font sound available off the card too. They would be independent of any external synths. Say you have a project. Say track one is assigned to your MIDI Out port's Channel 1 and is being received by your M1, whose output is routed into your OMNI/Delta interface so you can record it to an audio track eventually. Now imagine track 2 is using a Sound Font. It would be assigned to the SB card's Sound Font device, no cabling required, and plays through the SB's output. (If you don't have an SB Live card, there are also some software synths that can use Sound Fonts as a sound source.)

Thanks Alchuck. So in effect the Soundfont and Soundblaster are another synth that can be assigned to "playback" a sequence...right? In addition to the M1 and other modules? Do they need to be assigned to a midi channel? I assume so...

Man, I apologize for these 3rd grade questions...after all, I am a lead guitarist:-) This stuff is soooo new to me!

Hey Don Lee.
We all have, still and will find new stuff in recording.
Welcome to the board.
