.....of the Hafler TA1100 and 1600 power amps?

thanks,

(argh i don't want to hijack this thread, but weston, I've been thinking about the TA series because they're so much cheaper than the P1500 I've been wishing for. I'm using 20/20's. I would appreciate your opinion in this regard)

Sorry bout that, but a brand new thread would be wasteful!

Well what do you know... I'm, running 20/20s and a TA1600 as a back-up amp right now while my DaviSound TB-8 is back there getting a free upgrade (a design change). The case looks and feels cheap, but inside is what you'd expect from Hafler...

The ONLY problem I have with it, which is the same problem I have with many amps is that it's noisey (though not any more noise than most others). That's why I got rid of my 20/20bas and went with the passives (besides it being cheaper and easier to use multiple speakers laster-on when I have the funds)... I can use my TB-8 which I can litterally turn-up wide-open, put my ear right-up to the tweeter, and if all is quiet in the control room, my ear can detect the faintest bit of hiss!!!

At a realistic working volume (about half of what the amp is capable of), we're talking you'd NEVER, EVER hear an ounce of noise coming out of your monitors and the amp being the source. That's absolutely NOT something I take lightly!!! It sure does make you feel better to know FOR SURE that ANY extra, unreasonable noise you hear coming out of the monitors is going to show-up on the end product and you can try and track it and possibly fix it THEN, BEFORE it gets to tape or on the 2-track mix.

Are you saying that with the Halfer at half volume you won't hear anything from the amp, or with your Davidsound?

Also, it's been said a few times that a power amp should be left pretty much wide open, and gain should be controlled prior to the amp (line amp, mixer, etc). I don't know if it's true or not. How do you feel about it?

How does the hafler TA sound in general? It sounds like you're recommending it or at least not NOT recommending it, so it must be pretty decent?

Sorry if I was a bit confusing...

I was saying with the DaviSound, with it wide-open and sending a +4dBu line level directly to its inputs, I can put my ear right up to the tweeter and in a quiet control room (no fans and no 2 people talking to eachother), I can hear the faintist bit of hiss. But with the DaviSound wide-open and the console control room volume knob set to "loud" in my little control room, I'd NEVER, EVER hear noise coming out of the monitors with the amp being the source.

Yeah, I am recommending the TA1600. It's what you'd expect from Halfer, only in a cheap case. It would be good enough for me for my 20/20s if it wasn't for the hiss noise; as you get with most amps.

What I'm saying is I like my DaviSound TB-8 better (and it isn't just the noise thing (though it is a BIG deal to me), as it IS more accurate) and the $400 is most definitely worth it to me. BUT I don't think you'd be disappointed with the TA1600 if that's your budget. Besides, I think my mixes have turned-out pretty well with it!

Oh, and about the wide-open amp and volume controlled at its inputs, that pretty much holds true to be the best approach most of the time. You might now and again run into some amps where it's not, but that's probably pretty rare.
