It's been awhile since I have posted about construction stuff since the room is working but I am getting the itch again.
I have a large open space that is half finished, half unfinished (It's drywalled & wired but not cosmetically or acoustically). The finished side is sort of memphis. It's dead, cozy and works pretty well. The other side has approximately 12' ceilings and is basically untreated with anything other that some theatre curtains that are there to keep the reflections down. Other than that I store gear, stands, cabinets and cases to break up the area.
I would like to make this area lively and open for possibly tracking drums and such. The floor is concrete and I would like to put down hard wood for at least part of it. Like everyone else I am budget restricted. I have about $1500-2000 US to put into this. I will do all the labor myself.
I'm looking at some parquet style flooring at HD. This looks pretty easy to deal with. I am wondering if the sonic benefits of wook are related to the thickness. The parquet is pretty thin. SHould I consider the real deal. Are there particular woods to use or avoid?
For the walls I thought about slat resonators or somthing to diffuse it but keep i alive. I saw Micheal Jones post about using stone and that was inspiring. I thing slats or resonators would need some technical attention that I'm not sure I'm into at the moment. This might change as I get into it. (I do love to tech out but my plate is full currently in that area.) I would mostly like something sonically positive that's reletively tech free that has visual appeal as well. The stone concept has a pretty strong appeal.
I will attach a jpeg of the layout. The purple area is the part I am talking about treating. The reddish brown area is the finished portion. I'm not thinking of covering every surface with stone but a decent portion.
Let me know what you think.
Thanks RD
