I'm a sucker for surf music! This sounds great!!! I just became your fan on RN. 4 thumbs up!

excellent, really liked it.......

nice performance all round, and a pleasant change from the usual assualt

no nits on the mix from me :)

Surfing sounds good right now. I could use a little summer. :D Do I hear reverb on your drums?!?! That's unheard of. However, it does sound really good. I think your toms could use a little low end cut. The have a very boomy tail. Maybe a low shelf around 150Hz. Cool song.

Cool, thanks a lot. :drunk:

Thanks dude. The boomy toms are intentional. I tuned em that way on purpose. I'm glad you noticed. :o

I started out in a Rockabilly/Surf trio in Memphis back in the day.. so this ine really brings back the memories. man it's at least as good as anything i've heard in the genre. Articulate drumming that is interesting but not overdone, and i'd give a nut to play guitar like this dude- excellent! :D

Yup, everything sounds great. I love the drum sound on this one. Kik is nice and meaty with the perfect click. Great arrangement on the guitars. You got tremolo on one of the guitars, if I'm not mistaken? I think you have to for a surf tune. :D

Sounds great. This is my favorite of your surf tunes to be sure. I really like the guitar sounds on this. Did you use a fender on this? It doesn't sound like the sg, although I suppose with the neck pickup maybe you could get this kind of sound? Plus, does your sg have a whammy bar? There is definitely some whammy-ing going on here as a cool effect and I know just about ever fender has one. Just the right blend of a little distortion and lots of tremelo.

Is there a phaser or something on the overheads during the fadeout? That effect was kind weird, but ok. Really very well done Greg.

Nice work, Greg!
Reminds me of Pulp Fiction in a very good way.....:D
Beautiful arrangement and performance. This track really shows your musicality. The mix has a great 3-dimensional feel to it, probably because the verb on the guitars is just right. Once again, my admiration for you abounds.......;)

Cool, thanks. I used to play in a Psychobilly/Surf band back in the early 90's here in Houston. It was a lot of fun. Surf and Rockabilly go well together, and most crowds can't tell the difference or even care.

Thanks Rami. That's the Supraphonic finally too, although I'm not dialed in with it yet. The main guitar track has a constant tremolo on it.

Thanks heat. Glad ya liked it. There's 4 guitar tracks, and they're all a Strat on the bridge pickup only. The SG doesn't work for sounds like this. The "accent" track has some slight whammy bends on it. That's a flanger on the overheads during the outro. I wanted something weird there. :o

Nice work, Greg!

Thanks a lot Joey. The guitar reverbs really were a shot in the dark. I didn't use any reverb or EQ plugs on the guitar tracks. It's all "amp" sound and reverb. I had to retrack a few times to get it right.

:laughings: Yes, in that case, you got it. Just a random question about the reverb: I know you added here because it's a surf tune. A surf tune isn't a surf tune without reverb. :p Why don't you use it in any of your other songs? Do you find that it doesn't fit the genre, or that it's annoying, or some other reason???

I use reverb all the time. Just little bits. In my gergpunk stuff, I generally prefer things dryish and in your face. I think most home-recorders grossly overuse reverb, or at least overuse bad reverb.

Listening on Rokit 8's.

The song is a nice variation from your usual offerings, Greg. Clarity is nice, separation is nice, performance is top-notch, as usual.

My only nit, and I'm sure I'm the only one who feels this way, so take it with a spoonful of salt, but the mix, for this type of music (to me, and I'm no expert), is still way too much "in your face". When I think of surf music, I think of beach boys and wipeout. Those mixes are much more laid back. This one seems a bit too much "My head is 1 foot from the stack, and it's blowing it away." The main guitar (first one appearing in the mix) is super present, and the drums have their usual attack, but with a lot of reverb applied.

If this were me, I'd scoop some serious mids across the board, and pull the instruments back into the stage a bit. Give some breathing room.

It's almost 2:00am. I'm pretty sure all of this review came from my severe lack of sleep. I'll listen on my low-fi headphones tomorrow at work and see if I still agree with myself.

Thanks PI. I totally get what you're saying, but I'm not trying to make authentic early 60's surf music and sound like it. I'm just making Greg style surf music. :D

Liked the James Bond-y guitar. Generally really good.

Occasionally the Bond-y guitar gets a little harsh. But not really bad.

Maybe nudge up the snare a db or two? Personal taste thing.

Liked everything else.

Amp reverb is the only way to go on Surf. You dialed it in nicely man.
Didn't know you were a surfer - dude. Another excellent track!

Thanks dude. I think I'm with you on the louder snare.

Thanks Ido. I don't surf anymore, but I used to. Not that we ever get really good surf down here, but it's doable. I'd rather fish now. :D
