how do you guys make your recordings gleam and shine in sound forge? any tips or hints that will greatly improve my recordings?

I use Sound Forge for track editing, clean-up, applying fades and noise gating, but except for informal tweaking of EQ/levels and such, I don't consider it useful for DIY mastering.

Try remixing your music first off. There is nothing you can't do during mixing that Sound Forge can fix. Unless your using a different set of ears in a different room with different monitoring. Like Blue Bear said, you can do basic edits and maybe some low level dynamic adjustments, but remixing it would be more beneficial. Write down what you think the mix lacks and then remix. Lots of pro places take a 2nd look at the mix and do altrnative mixes. You can get OK mastering processing out of SF if you have additional plug-ins that are geared toward Mastering as functions.

One useful thing it has is a multi-band compressor. You can apply certain compressor/limiter settings to a certain frequency range, and do four frequency ranges at once. Very flexible, powerful tool.

Yes - but it doesn't seem to sound particularly good, at least, to my ears........ which is one of the reasons I don't consider it a good "mastering" tool.........

Weird, I find the stock SF 5.0 to 6.0 to sound kinda "hard". While the CD Architect 5.0 track compressor and track eq to be pretty acceptable. I wonder why they didn't use the same plugs on both progs? Could it be....SF isn't made to do mastering? And CD Architect is? Mnnmm. I wish D Architect was able to use VST on top of Direct X like Wavelab. Oh Well.

That is a very good question, indeed, SoMm.

A mastering house! :p

Seriously though, I beleive the big boys use Sadie and Sonic Solutions......

And Samplitude Pro 7, Nuendo, Sequoia ,ProTools, some are using Wavelab with the appropriate plug-ins( WAVES). Most of the pro's are using software that cost anywhere from $400 to $1400 approximately. The converters are about 3 times that amount so that the good digital stays good digital. Having the software is only 1/50th of getting started though. It would be best to start with cheap software and great monitors so you actually hear how bad the cheap software is rather than cheap monitors and expensive software so that the monitors hide how crappy the music really is ;) Im speaking from experience mind you and its not as easy as just tweaking some EQ and adding some compression and limiting ;) But you have to start somewhere right.

ouch!!!

Sadie and Sonic Solutions are big $$$$ I believe. 3-4k??? OK,if you had a gun to your head and had to use one of the more inexpensive software programs for mastering. What is everyone choice??

In a case like that it would be a moot point at best since I most likely would have shorted out my system when I pissed my pants!
