Hi, i recorded my bands debut album through Garageband. We didnt master this but it was given a release through a label in the US called Lightyear Entertainment/EMI.

The contract term comes to an end this year and i really want to see if i can tout it to some other labels. Im still really new to recording and basically my question is......what kind of difference would getting the tracks mastered make?

The songs are up at the bandcamp page below. If anyone could maybe find any time to take a listen and maybe just give some feedback as to what mastering will do to the tracks. deadmodels.bandcamp dot com

Also, one last thing, again a silly question....are the stems mastered individually or is the song mastered as a whole.

Many Thanks for your time

Nathan

Mastering is done on the final mix, not on the track stems. A good mastering job will always improve the final results - one of the most important functions is to get the songs to fit well together.

If you want to tout it about, try Elefant Records - Your music is the kind of thing this label releases. A friends band have had some success with them.

Personally, I would go back to the mixing stage with the majority of those tracks before thinking about mastering.

Mastering is done on the whole song or series of songs. Ideally the make them all a bit more uniformed in sounds and volume. If you think there are bits that need fixing with mastering, go back and fix it in the mix. The better the mix you give a Mastering Engineer, the easier it will be for him/her to get your tracks sounding mint. Shit in = shit out remember.

Having said all that, I've have listened to a lot of the tracks and I think they're really good songs. I would just work on the mixing a bit more before anything. The bass drum on 09 Nothing To You for example sounds like an exploding fart and not a pleasant one.

That's my tuppence worth anyway. :thumbs up:

Haha!! The exploding fart was the exact sound i was trying to mimic!! Haha. Seriously though, thanks for the advice. I will get back into these tracks and have another try at mixing, its been 2 years so hopefully it'll be a different experience this time round.

Thanks for the heads up regarding Elefant too, i'll get in touch

Many Thanks again for your time.

Definitely go back to the mix. You probably need to mix with a lot more headroom. No need to push everything to the top of the meters.

What was it mixed in? Assuming a DAW?
