1. Final EQ on the 2 track master
2. Final compression on the 2 track master
3. Dithering
4. Sequencing (putting the songs in order and encoding track start and stop markers
5. Testing master CD and preparing PQ sheet for the duplication house.

Mastering is the process of readying a number of tracks for final transfer to CD, vinyl or tape. The idea is that all the tracks have a consistent feel EQ and volume-wise. Reverb is sometimes used but sparingly. A mastering engineer is to a mixing engineer as a master pastry chef is to a baker. They put the final touches on a project to help it compete with everything else out there while maintaining its own integrity.
