Mastering (technically, "premastering") is the final tweak session and construction of the final version of a recording or set of recordings.

Also known as "the part where everything gets way too loud."

If you read some stuff at the www.massivemastering.com site, you'll probably get an idea.

The mastering process includes the following:
  • Overall equalization for clarity and consistency
  • Making volume levels consistent and competitve, without being over-bearing
  • Editing of content
  • Provide proper spacing and fades
  • Noise removal
  • Sequencing of the songs or audio material
  • Creating any materials needed for replication or distribution (e.g. PQ lists, final master, etc.)
  • Helps to ensure that the audio will "translate" well between different playback systems
  • Engineer provides an objective "ear"
