Mastering volume

sorry for any confussion.

I guess my example wasn't very well thought out, and I didn't mean to suggest to have a "ratio goal" before hearing anything, and I forgot to add "everything else being equal" (threshold etc...)

My point is,

Compressing multiple times can ruin your tracks...really really fast ....if your not careful.

Take into consideration that things will be compressed in the mix, mastering and again at the radio station (if it gets that far)....

By understanding that compression multiplies at each stage, you can learn to not follow the herd and create some dynamic music for a change by easing up in the early stages.
 
in the mix, i ended up using a multiband compessor in cubase sx on most of the instruments. I am not sure what kind of compression ratio this plugin used, it didn't have an option for it. I used this feature because i was able to get the drums mixed better since I had the hole kit on one track.
