Hey everybody,

I'm Rodrigo, first time on this forum. I'm a beginner homestudio-ist.

I recently recorded 4 tracks with my punk band, and I just finished the mastering.
Could you please tell me what you think of it? This is a test version, any comments or advices would really be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance!

I cant really comment on the sonic element much as I'm using my laptop at the moment. I'd have to listen to it later on my monitors. Why don't you try posting some of your stuff in the mp3 clinic, you'll get more people to check it out :-)

The main thing I thought of was how this sounds like one long song. There isn't an extreme difference between the four songs. By the way, that blehhhh sound was pretty...yeah lol.

Hey man sounds great in my opinion. I'm listening with my Bose Triports right now. Sound reminds me of "the Swingin' Utters". I think it sounds fabulous...

Sounds well mixed, not my style of music, of course. No dynamics (everything is pretty much the same volume).

Personally, I think the vocals sound a little too loud and upfront. I'd pull the fader down on it and add a touch of reverb to it, but that's just personal preference, not really a professional critique...
I agree with MJB, it's a little too slammed in my opinion. I'd suggest loosening up on the compression a bit. Lower that ratio to maybe a 2 or 3:1, and make it really soft. I like it when my music has some nice dynamics to it.
I like how it's mixed, the only real problem I have is the lack of dynamics. Aside from that, well done sir. =]
Oh, and welcome to HR.com.

I actually do listen to this sort of music (close enough, anyway), and I think it sounds pretty good overall. It sounds like you're actually looking for a critique on the mix, not the master. As far as the mix goes, I would agree that the vocals are a little too upfront and could benefit from some reverb. Are the drums triggered or is that an acoustic kit? It sounds like triggers or an electronic kit to me, and I think that's where the lack of dynamics is stemming from. The only thing I would change on the drums is that the cymbals are a little shrill. Not sure how you EQ'd the overheads, but maybe a little less high end there. Those things are pretty minor, and I'm only mentioning them because you asked for advice.

On the off chance that you actually wanted a critique on the mastering and not the mixing, you would need to post an unmastered version of the recording as well. We would need to compare the two to see what you did during the mastering.

BTW, did anyone listen to the lyrics in these songs?

Hey guys,

thanks a lot for your help.

I spent a bit of time on the mixing again. You can check it here: soundcloud.com/rodrigolopez-3/test-mix
What do you think of it? I'm quite satisfied with it, but as I told you, I still have much to learn!

I lowered the compression of the kick and snare, re-eq'd the overheads and put some reverb on the vocals.

Thanks again!
