but remember...waves does not make you a mastering engineer..it takes years of skill building. how do yall like using waves anyway? is it complicated?

This is interesting...

I like the sound fenix gets out of Waves but have also been wondering about the UAD since it's a little cheaper and will also offload some of the cpu processing. I do home mastering mostly so for stereo tracks either one would work nicely. For (my) mixes though I'm thinking I would run out of power on the UAD sooner of later like around 10 or 12 tracks maybe. Same with Waves - I'd run out of CPU (Win XP 2.6GHz P4 1Gb mem).

The trick is to track better I guess so you don't need to push everything into a LA2.

What do you guys say about capacity and such ?

I don't do an awful lot of mixing anymore - I'm 90% mastering (if you couldn't guess) so I rarely tax more than the bare minimum (4 to 6 stereo tracks running simultaneously) on the UAD card. Somewhere on their site is a list of what you can typically run with one UAD-1 card.

Of course, there are extras to add also...

Cambridge EQ - Must have. DreamVerb - Must have. Fairchild - Eh, it sounds like a Fairchild. If you're looking for that sound, grab it. Won't do you much good for mastering (although I've seen a LOT of "Child abuse" on several forums since it was released).

That being said, on the "cheaper" side, it wouldn't matter - I would easily spend triple what UAD is asking for those plugs.

Please do not forward this message to UAD. :D

I tried this out once . . .

And I hated it. The interface just bothered me. Not particularly user-friendly.

BUT it's capable of doing everything you'd need for self-mastering, and it only cost a couple hundred bucks. If you can learn to get used to the tacky interface, you could save yourself some money and have a set of tools that are arguably every bit as capable.

Massive - Are you comparing the UAD and plugs to waves gold or platinum? I have a Digi 002 so I can get the waves gold upgrade for $600 or less then get the platinum upgrade for another $600, but if I can get the whole studio pack for $900, and it smokes waves like u say, it might be worth looking into.

hookiefree - Platinum.

Understand that I'm certainly not saying that Waves are bad - The entire Waves selection, soup to nuts, are great plugs. I also agree on the L2 - Nice plug if it's not abused.

Also, the Waves package has a lot of esoteric nifty effects, the PAZ stuff, the X stuff... It's all great stuff.

It's just the UAD set... Whoo... They're just MASSIVE (no pun intended).

I just want to sweeten my tracks a lil and make them louder. If I really want something to sound pro I'll take it to a pro. With that said do you think the $600 Waves Gold upgrade will be my best bet?

If all you want is to make them louder, I would use PSP Vintage Warmer. It is great for this type of application.
