mastering plugin

i currently use cool edit and fruity loops 4 i am happy with the sound i get. but when i try to compress the track on fruity loops it gets a muffed sound and the same goes for cool edit. i am wondering is there any plug in that will give me a clean and clear sound

Software.....Waves compressors work well, but expensive. (3rd party)
Or go with an external unit.

Waves stuff is definetly considered professional stuff..but yes, it's expensive..
