I am not that familiar with metal, so my examples will have to be outside the genre...WOW LOL!!! That is brutal! Hmmmm the bottom end sounds heavy as hell to me! Whats an example of a song that you think sounds amazing?
So you get albums from bands like Operation Ivy that by all rights sound like dog shit, only they work so well you would be hard-pressed to do anything differently.

The thing is, you can't separate the sound from the feeling. Is "big" how red the meters are, or is "big" how fucking angry the guitar sounds? There is no anger in a click and drag from a mouse. There can be anger in a guitar player's hands.
Calm down. I didn't say it had no bottom end. I said it is kind of light in the bottom end for something that's supposed to be "heavy" and aggressive. Big difference. Chibi Nappa already pointed out what makes this mix sterile and uninteresting. I agree with him. I hate to play the vinyl card, but I remember listening to records. They didn't sound like this. And I'm totally not an analog snob. I love digital recording. I guess, off the top of my head, Green Day's "American Idiot" album is a pretty good example of a modern slick production that has a pretty big bottom end. Listen to the kick and bass. They're pretty big yet not muddy.

To be fair, this style of production can work, and can work extremely well. You just have to have song titles like "It's Time to Party", "Party 'til you Puke", and "Party Hard" (one of my favorite albums of all time). When you bring the cheese, be sure to bring ALL of the cheese.
But if your tongue is anywhere other than entirely in your cheek, this style of machine perfection can really fall flat.
Well, yeah. "Big" is a combination of a large powerful sound and the emotion behind it (and probably several other things). So you certainly don't want to ditch the sonics and careful studio production. It's just that you also don't want to kill the human behind the performance in a Protools editing frenzy while trying to make those sonics larger.You also have to seperate your fanboi lust for this band from your thought process.
For example, I freaking LOVE the Ramones first album. Love it. It's perfect to me. But there's no way in hell I'd suggest that it's production is the standard by which all other punk albums should be measured. That's just silly.![]()

Dude, the "Killswitch sound" has been the standard modern metal/rock sound for years. At least a decade. Hell it's no different than a Creed, Alterbridge, or Nickelback album. It's just another very highly polished rock recording. Stop being a fanboi and think objectively.

That's because you're a typical blind fanboi. I'm not a fan of any of those bands, so I can easily hear the similarities in production. Not the music, the production.
Well for one, I'm not a fanboi and second I do see the similarities in the production but I ALSO see the differences in the production and I hear a lot of big differences.
