The First or second song?
What song is he suggesting the first one on the page or the second? I liked the first one a lot thought both songs I think will do just fine. The songs are a bit raw but I think well recorded. Good band and nice work TexRoadkill!

Fishmed I did corrections or "Mastering" on your song and I uploaded it to Malcolm ftp. I don't know the download like you would need to use to listen to it but I'm sure Malcolm can let you know. What's the link Malcolm? Again thanks for the space for upload.

No problem, Just gotta watch it though. that server is not too reliable with the internet connection that I have. I am building a new one soon. Only about 2 gig of free space, but it can be used to host files in the meantime. I just hate listening to MP3 when I am in this forum.

While we are waiting, I posted a song on my FTP site. The song is entitled essential and was performed by a local band here in augusta called Three Sixty. The song was recorded back in the late 90s.
I have no history on the mix or gear used, but this is a mixdown that was recorded to cd. I just ripped it off and posted it.
If yall wanna have a go at it, then help yourself.
It's a 6 piece band.
My site goes up and down so if it's down just wait a minute and I will get it back up. I watch it daily.

As long as these things continue to be ftp or internet based I cannot participate because of dialup restrictions.
I also think we need at least 3 songs that are different to challenge people on assembly and other processes. Rules... we need a clear set of rules as well as somebody willing to take on WoMP-Jr

It's sad that it fizzled.
I hear what you're saying about FTP, but really, for a mastering contest, you only need to DL one file...not like the mixing contest.
I think three songs would make the comparison hard. We should stick to just one song. Now the MIXING contest might have been more interesting with three songs.

knightsy you might be better off doing a search in the forum about mastering. There is a lot that can be done and a the explanation can be quite lengthy.

Are you talking about me doing "mastering" with files sent over the web? Well I aint a mastering engineer, but I'd have a crack at it. If I had broadband and was recieving 24bit wavs or SDII files that would be good too.
If you're talking about Mr. psrecordings, well this guy doesn't look like he knows what he's doing to be honest. A Fostex 1/4" mastering deck? Hmm. And he lists Bob Katz's book as one of his tools. Hardly inspires confidence. Plus the fact that he has no real outboard gear makes me wonder. And at the rates he's charging, he could barely afford to flick the light switch on when he walks into work.

knightsy disregard my last post regarding mastering over the web. Mastering is something that should never be done over the internet (IMO) no matter what bit-rate the file is at. I just don't trust that it's keeping the source material at it's original quality.
I do agree that the guy shouldn't be listing "equipment" when his list is mostly software that you can get cracks for on the web a dime a dozen.
I'm surprised that a guy that has done as many "Mastering jobs" as he claims doesn't have better gear or at least the standard audio mastering software (Sonic Studio HD). His services would most likely not benefit people here at this forum because most home studios from guys here have more and better equipment then what he has (not to mention more experience most likely).
I give the guy credit for put himself out there though there are many things that he could have done prior to look a bit more professional to his possible clients.

Data is FTP'd to and from high profile mastering houses, plants, and labels everyday without issue.
Interesting - a single incorrect bit of data can cause a piece of software to crash, yet you think that audio data might get screwed?sonicpaint said:

I'm not certain but I do think(and may be wrong) that any file being transfered through the web is losing some of it's quality somewhere down the line.
When burning to CD I always make sure I'm burning in real time to preserve what quality I have in the original. I know that this was more of a concern when the burners weren't as good as they are today but I still do, just to be sure I'm doing everything I can to keep my files at their best.
I guess if I have a doubt that my files will be degraded in any given way I'll avoid what ever process that causes that doubt. Over doing it? Maybe, but I rather be on the safe side then not knowing for sure.
I'll see if I can find some info on this net transfer thing to see if the quality of the file is being altered in any way.
