just wondering, folks...

Why's the song gotta have "real" drums & NOT be r&b or hip-hop? I'd imagine the ME's techniques gotta be on point, regardless of the genre. Maybe some of you can't cut the mustard unless the music's a particular genre? If that's true, cool, I guess, but if so, own your shortcomings instead of blaming the music for them...

I mean, I'd happily submit some (drum) tracks that can rival most decent skin-bangers dynamically. I use drum machines because I can't play drums, not because I think they sound sterile or cheezy or cheap (though I sometimes "go for" those sounds, too)...

Seems to me like some of you are equally interested in Joe Schmo's mic'ing techniques, too, and that's a whole 'nother game, isn't it?

Play nice with me, folks, I'm just asking what's up...

And if it's GOTTA be all live instrumentation, then I kick it with some cats that are terrors on their weapons of choice...

Alas, we do R&B among other things...

Because we want it to be something where people actually sing and play real instruments. :D

Here is a song.

Here is a song to master.

Spiral

It is a 44.1/16bit wave file, and it is a compromise to a MP3 file for those who have dial-up connections. The file is 34.7MB.

It may not be the best mix, but if you don't like it...

Fix it!

I stated not hip hop and R&b, because I figured we would work with something with a lot of dynamic range using real insts.

I think it's more challenging

I mainly do hip hop and R&B tho.

Fish....

I like the tune, but I'd have to say a re-mix may be in order before you think about mastering.... the mastering process isn't going to fix the snare sitting way too low in the mix, and there's something really funky with the way the bass/kick is sitting relative to the rest of the track.

OTOH - it may be interesting to see exactly what people CAN do with it!

Good song, either way, though!!!

I thought it would be a good challenge.
If the general community would like me to do a quick remix, I could do one this weekend. If I do, let me know more of what you would like fixed. I will give folks till Saturday morning (Central time) to respond about a remix. If I do a remix, I will post what I did to the mix.

Thank you BB for the feedback.

It doesn't really matter.

Personally I'm not concerned about the file having real drums or not and I don't think that's what people were getting at when it was mentioned that it was preferred. So try not to be too defensive Flo' Dolo though I can understand how you can take it that way.

As to Fisher's song being mastered? I don't know if it was a bad download or what but I got a lot of what seemed to be distortion or crackling through out the whole song. Has anyone else had this problem or is it the way the song is? Aside from the crackling I would have to agree that the song needs to be remixed and if the distance or depth of some of the tracks can't be fixed in the mix then some of those track would have to redone before the mastering stage.

Good song though!

Thanks, I guess...

Again, I was just wondering where people were coming from, like maybe I missed something in class or something...

Guess I'll just try to listen & try to learn.

Like BB said. NAW, But the only thing I would have liked is a louder/more consistent snare. I think the mix it's self is a good one to work with like it is ( but just a louder snare ). Lets the mastering guys show some skills. It would be interesting to hear all of the different flavors and approaches people would put on it.

Song came through fine for me.

Two things this newbie would fix in the tracking and mixing:
Snare could stand to come up.
Guitars are a bit "hollow sounding."

I'm anxious to play with this...hey, I know I have no idea what I'm doing but I have Waves plugins and some time :D

Thanks Sonicpaint, Malcolm123, & even Chessrock for your comments. I wasn't trying to be pointy, just didn't (and still don't) understand what the deal was w/genre, if any. Chalk it up to my inexperience, I guess.

I wanted to toss up a link to a song & participate in the game, too, but I think instead i'll just try to listen & try to learn...

thanks,

Dolo

Personally, I don't care what the genre is - I just didn't want to bother with MP3 or some other crippled audio format!

That's what I thought was most important, too Blue Bear.
That and a good mix...

<sorry for the weird double post, dunno what happened there>

Your right ! and No Problem

Ok Ill post a mix if some one gives me a link.
All real insts. 6 piece Neo-Soul band.
It'll be 16/44.1 though. I wasnt working with these guys back then and all they gave me was a mixdown to cd.

Here's a shot at Spiral. I know - we haven't settled on the tune, but what does it hurt.

Newbie Entry. LOL

Ok,

Here is my shot at it for the newbie catagory. LOL

Got bored at work so I put on the wifey's GPX workout headphones and tweeked.

I will do another one later on real gear once we decide on a definite track. Theres a wav and a mp3 version.

ftp://ftp.knighthoodrecords.com/

Login = tracks
password = hood

I will move it to a more stable server later. This one goes up and down. So if dont work now it will work later.

Malcolm

We need one person to select a track to be mastered. I'll nominate Fenix since he started this thread.
