Hey, that's my job. :(

I wanna play too. May as well butcher someone else's songs along with my own.

So are we going to use mixmkr song?

I would doubt it. I don't think he was serious.

fenix, Since this is your thread and the question of loudness has come up I'd like to suggest some potential wording for a 'loudness' ground rule should you or your committee establish any.

Groundrule for loudness...simply:

"The song should be as loud as it needs to be."

Good Mastering, Finalizing and Pre-Mastering!

I'm serious about a song...but I don't think bluebear would enjoy working on it, so I'll pass because of that.

What I might suggest is going to the mp3 clinic, and take one of the better songs from someone like SluCie or BSabbath and go from there. I'm sure they'd be more than willing to offer one of their songs. The one downfall is they usually don't use real drums, but their mixes seem amongst the best over there. Potentially starting with as good a mix as you can get would seem to start things off right.

yeah kylen, if anyone can get it loud and it sounds good/suits the tune, then i'm all for it.

We really need a nice sounding tune with real drums though.

This whole idea . . . frankly sounds kinda' gay (pardon the expression). But I'll submit something just for shits & giggles, I suppose.

Shouldn't be too bad for you...drive over to Chess Studios and jump in one of their classic rooms and re-amp the thing ! Give us that Muddy Waters, Little Walter, Jimmy Rogers sound.

That might sound kinda' gay, too, but I'm sure it would be fun.

:D

does the mix have to be real good or decent enough to work with? Im thinking if the mix is really good, then it wouldnt need to much mastering done.

The better the mix, the better the mastering can be, and the better the end result will be!

So no turd polishing huh ? LOL

If yall cant come up with anything, I will be willing to submit a mix for yall to see if you wanna F@ck with it.

Not hip hop or R&b either

BB, it would be one of the better mixes from the group you heard.
oh, and I still havent gone to the studio yet.

That's what I was kind of wondering about - the purpose of the contest.

Is it to:

1. Take a really great mix and add the last 5-10% of polish.
or
2. Take an average sounding mix and breath some life into it - pump it to the beat (in a good way), propell it into greatness.
or
3. Take a fairly bad mix that is pretty unbalanced, maybe representative of mixing on small computer speakers, and re-balance that. This type represents an obsticle course.
or
4. Take an averge mix with some typical broadband noise in it. This type also represents an obsticle course.

You could have 1 song or a couple of different songs, one catagory or a couple of catagories like the ones listed above.
A couple of easy catagories or tougher ones with obsticle courses.
You know kind of the range of stuff an ME might get - even the pros get a fairly wide range of material to deal with, abrupt beginnings, fades that cut out, etc.

I wanna hear the MEs at work. LOL

Polish that damn turd !!

I do agree that the best mix would give us the best opportunity to make a good master, but I would be more interested in making a so-so recording into something better.

oops put my mix in the wrong thread. I am interested in the mastering too.

Maybe your on to something

Maybe we should try to do that, I think it would be more challenging. If were using an MP3 then it would make more sense anyway considering the quality that the song is going to be at right from the start.

What does everyone else think?

Well if you all decide to use the origional... I'd be more than happy to allow whoevers song it is to upload the oriigional 24bit wav file (if that's what it is) to my ftp server. Then everyone can download the origional. I'm sure the song would be at least 40meg huh?

....ooh... wait... a lot of you are still stuck in dialup land huh. Well maybe you could download it overnight?? I don't know. Just offering some help! :)

Absolutely 24 bit-who knows where the finished product will end up. Hate to see a studio's potential diminished because an MP3 was used as a source. Maybe keep the standards high so we can hear everyone at their best-just my opinion.

Agreed - it's not worth it to start with anything less than a WAV...
