What do you guys think about having a mastering contest? Please, not the same song in the mix contest thread. I'm gonna go crazy if I hear that song one more time! :)

Sounds good to me!

I'd like to give it a go!

we just need a well mixed well performed good song we can chop up. :)

This was done once before (coupla years back)..... count me in!

I'm in... mostly just to see what you guys all think of the work I'm doing over here.

could someone post a good link to what's involved in mastering...

or briefly explain it, thanks...

EQ, compression, stereo widening, noise reduction, limiting, inserting of fades, inserting proper amount of time before a track (usually 1/4 -1/2 second), and sometimes using automated volume adjustments to a final mix. These are just some of the things that may or may not be done to a mix when it is mastered.

To some, mastering is just putting the "sonic maximizer" such as the L1 or L2 on SLAM! mode.

Finex, BB, you guys are tech elite no question...

many thanks...

Where we going to get a song?

Now all we need is a song. Anyone? Is the file going to be a wave at a high bit rate or are we going to use an mp3? I'm sure we'd all want to work with the best file possible but I guess we'll have to see what the most convenient way about doing this will turn out to be.

Anyone have suggestions?

Sounds fun - I wanna play !

What are the ground rules, purpose, and time frame ?

I'm in the midst of putting some treatments in my DIY 'mastering area' but I could play if the timeframe works out. I'm kinda new here so I don't know how long your contests usually run...

I'd rather work with a wave file - 16bit minimum. But I'll work with whatever you guys decide.

Will there be an obstacle course or will we start with a fairly balanced mix and go for the last 10% - Ha Ha, could be interesting ! Fun - no doubt. And the winner can explain what they did and how after it's over - or will it be chalked up to 'tricks of the trade' ? :)

This could be interesting, as long as this keeps away from being a loudness contest...

There's no such thing as a WAV with a high bitrate.... the term "bitrate" applies to compressed audio or video ONLY and represents the average number of bits transmitted in 1 sec.

humm, good point, might be hard on the ear's or one's mind set ;)

[CAUTION] Adjust Vol Levels [WARNING] i'd hate to pop a monitor over this test thingy :(

just a thought...

I wrote bit "rate" when I should have wrote bit "depth", simple typo, but thanks for pointing that out.

So are we going to use mixmkr song?
