Looking for recommendation for some type of hardware compressor or limiter to run mixes through. Goal is to try to smooth out mixes and cut some of the harshness I hear at times. Now I'm not talking a Fairchild 670.lol.... Something $1500 or less.

TK Audio BC1-S -- Not what I'd consider a "mastering" unit, but definitely geared towards the mix buss. Elysia Xpressor wouldn't be a bad unit either. Same thing. "Glue" for lack of a better term.

Cutting harshness? Neither -- That's a mix issue. Compressing is going to make that worse, not better.

Yes understood. Harsh not really best definition. Better put looking for more of a leveler

You can also check out the Overstayer Stereo VCA compressor. I have it, and use it all the time on the mix bus of my console. I also have a couple of the other Overstayer comps, and they are very well reviewed units.

The Stereo VCA is like $1000.....so well within your budget.
Also go to Gearslutz for reviews/comments on the Overstayer gear.

I recently got the elysia Alpha compressor plug-in and absolutely love it, now I'm using it for all my mastering needs, not expensive either compared to the hardware unit and sounds almost identical, the MS mode and transparency of the sound sold it for me, it just does the job and has every feature you will ever need.

If you want less harshness try using EQ instead? cut out the harsh frequencies then compress it, as has been said that should all be sorted in the final pre-master mix.

Overstayer Stereo VCA is good. But you should check for more, that fits to your budget...
