Does anyone have any clue what Metallica's guitar set up was in Master of Puppets? and is there an affordable way for ME, a starving colleg student, to do it?

There's a thread over at gearslutz.com that'll make your asshole pucker. Flemming Rasmussen the producer on the first few albums scanned and posted almost every note from the sessions. They usually documented everything they did back then so they could remember the settings. There are configs, eq settings, preamp settings, everything, for every song through And Justice. You won't believe the info he gives. Just go over there and search master of puppets threads.

that thread is like a treasure cove.

And I thought I was weird for writing down my settings for each song, LOL, who knew...

Wow! that's about one of the coolest things I've ever seen on the intrawebs. To me, anyway. Flemming seems like a really cool guy. Thanks a ton for the heads up on that.

it's too bad that Bob Rock tricked em out like a buncha $2 bitches. they were a good band once upon a time.

To answer the "how do I do it on a budget" question, the Mesa MkIII's are similar to the MkII's, at a fraction of the price. Some of the MkIII's (I think the red and blue stripes, so-called due to magic marker lines above the power cable) are close enough to MkII's that they can be retrofitted to C+ specs by Boogie. Arguably the best bargain in amps today.

Ya that Flemming is a hell of a guy. I have emailed back and forth with him a few times. He's a fucking legend! And taking the time to post all that shit and communicate with people - classy guy.

Fantastic thread

The thread on gearslutz is one of the best threads I've ever read. Wow.

Glad you guys enjoyed the link. To me it was like Christmas every time I opened one of Flemming's links. Shit like this should be in the RnR HoF.

I personally think this thread should stick around for a while. I can't count how many times people have asked about amp settings and how to do this and that. IMO this is a great guide to helping people learn how to make a better recording.

I'm bumping this up cus this is kick ass info for noobs.

Just remember who spoon fed you that amazing link. By the way, Michael Wagener who mixed some Metallica stuff is a moderator over there and generally answers a lot of questions.

Nevermind just saw the pos rep, you're welcome. Happy I could share the link, it's like history or something.

& then they went all prettyfied with music that appeals to... my wife!

Good thread reference. The engineeer was very thourough. But I can't believe you guys are sooooo hung up on the MOP sound. Give it a rest. Metal is DEAD. ;)
