A few people I know are doing a mix competition. The first song up is Marvin Gaye's "What's Going On".

We are supposed to add a little spin on it of our own so I introduced a psychedelic element into the 3rd part of the song.

Tell me what you think!

Great soul lead vocalist!

But after that I wasn't as excited.

I sensed some timing tension in the various percussion parts . . . they din't sit together very well. Additionally, the kit is very much in the background, and would give the track a bit more life if it brought forward. Overall the track seemed to lack life and excitement, even though the ingredients are there. Maybe too much ooh aah stuff going on. The bit in the middle was fine.

Wait, wait, just for clarification: this uses the origanal Marvin Gaye mixtracks. It is not a cover! So of course it has a great soul voice :P

I left the percussion the way they were recorded when it comes to timing. I'll look into that.

You learn something new every day. Well, even the greats can be sloppy in their recordings.

You can go on youtube and listen to lots of isolated tracks from famous players/albums. Many of them are hilariously less than what you'd expect.

Cliff Burton's playing on Master of Puppets leads to wonder if his death might have actually improved the quality of their recordings.

What's really amazing is the snare sound in the original mix.

[Edit] Wait, it's Mercy, Mercy Me that has the crazy snare sound.
