Marshall Solid State of Mind

Are the Marshall solid states DECENT? Even the hybrid models. This is not intended to be a comparison w/ any tube amp or another "Is the POD worth it?" type discussion. Just the amp on it's own.

In 1984 I had a 30-40 watt model & remember it as being 'gusty' & not very high end. The new AVT series are not appealing w/ the onboard effects but do have a preamp tube circuit. The older VS series are described well but were discontinued for some reason. I play rock/metal & have a POD (maybe it would be a good combo w/ a marshall). Home recording would be it's only use.

I have a VS102R which is the 100watt 2x12 Valvestate combo. I use a Digitech RP200 into the clean channel and I think it sounds pretty good at low volume.

I'am not too happy with the sound when I start pushing it past 4 or so. Volume goes up tone goes by-by. It sounds too thin to me at higher volume. I get the same effect running my guitar straight into the dirty channels too. I do like the sound of it at lower volumes, great for late night noodling.

I haven't tried any of the pure solidstate Marshalls.

Every solid state Marshall I've tried has sounded like crud. Even compared with anything else--fizzy mosquito fart distortion. They should be ashamed...

I have a Marshall VS265R 2*12 combo with chorus and reverb. Adequate amp I suppose. Trouble is, I only play this thing at home; hence I don't get past 25% on the volume. When I gig I rent proper amps; I think that says it all. If on the other amp you wish to buy this off me, feel free to make me an offer.

The thing is I have a buddy selling a G80RCD(80 watts/1x12 combo) for $150. Maybe I can talk him down to $100. Maybe a Turbo Tube Screamer or POD would be an improvement.
