I used to own the AVT150 head, and I liked it for a while, but at a certain point I decided my tone just wasn't there and it was time to move up to a tube amp. I should have decided that to start with; I could have saved money in the long run. I bought a TSL601 and sold the AVT. The TSL601 is a 60-watt 1x12 combo, but I usually use it as a head powering a Hughes & Kettner 4x12 I picked up from Craigslist for $200. That was a bargain, by the way--the cab is loaded with Celestions and sounds great, and I see the same cabs sell at GC for almost $500 used. I like the flexibility of having the combo because if I'm playing a place that's too small to warrant hauling the 4x12 around, I just use it as a combo. The 4x12 sounds way better though. So yes, look into getting a real tube amp. I used to think that guys who are all about tubes and nothing else were just dogmatic and living in the past, but now I'm not really interested in anything but tube amps.
Oh, and by the way, yes, the AVT150 should have no problem powering two 4x12s. I don't think my TSL601 would flinch at that either--I know a guy who plays in a band called Tight Phantomz, and during one of his shows he was using a JCM800 combo (probably 50 watts, but I'm not positive about that) to power two 4x12s. It looked a little ridiculous and it was totally unnecessary for the size of venue it was, but it worked. Next time I saw them, though, he had switched to a JCM900 head with a single 4x12. Probably got sick of lugging two cabinets around--I know I would.
