Mixing and Mastering.
Ive been reading up on this amp and I read that its not a pre amp. Now im confused.
Can I run this amp straight into my Marshall 1960 cabinet? Or do I need a pre amp like the Marshall DSL50 or something also?

Cheers,
Eck

you would run it straight into your cab but you're gonna have to have a preamp too as that thing is simply a power amp.

Thank you for the replies.
Could I use an ART tube pre amp as the pre amp?
You know the small single input pre amp that is used for vocal/guitar recording?

Cheers,
Eck

It may not be ideal, but I'm pretty sure that it'd work. The ART tube preamps tend to steal the highs out of whatever you send through them, and its hard to push them without them distorting so the end result might not be to your liking.

Personally, I'd recommend just getting an amp head. Especially considering that the Epiphone Valve Junior head is only $100 and would more than likely sound as good if not better than an ART tube pre into a power amp into a cabinet.

Although now that I look at that link, holy freaking cow! 12 tubes in that thing?!? I wonder what the overall wattage is? I can't imagine being able to turn it up enough to get the "good" distortion without your house collapsing from the spl generated by that plugged into a 4x12!

The DSL50 is not a preamp, that is a preamp with a poweramp in one unit, aka an amp head.

Power output approx 200 watts when driven with a line level input.

Cheers all.
Is the only point in this amp for power then?
Im looking for a nice head thats smooth and not harsh or muddy.
I dont care for the amp distortion too much more so the clean sound as I have a GT6 I use for my effects.
Any suggestions atall?

Yes, it is a power-amp without a pre-amp. I bet the thing rocks slap a Boogie preamp out front of it and off you go. I would love one (until I had t pick it up.) I have seen people use the JMP 1 in front sounded good.

!

Cheers.
A mesa into a 9200!! Ooft that must hurt the Old wallet. :)

you should be able to run your gt6 straight into it, as the gt6 should be able to output line level

Good point, I didn't even think of that.

Let me try by explaining a few things for you. If any of this is old news I apologize in advance.
In a traditional amp head you have 2 stages the power amp stage that generates power and the pre-amp stage wich shapes the tone.
In Rack systems these 2 are seperate and can be interchanged. such as the Marshall 9200 power amp and a Marshall JMP1 pre amp. Or another comboination could be a Mesa Triaxis and the 9200 or a JMP1 and a mesa simulclass power amp. It all comes down to the users preferances. With such a system the user has a number of channels available. instead of the 2 or 3 on standard amp heads. So you could have 4 different distortion patches available and a few clean tones available at the same time. They can easily be switched by the control pannel or by using a MIDI footswitch. If the user ever got tired of the tones he could simply upgrade to a different pre amp. All of this coup[led with a multi effects processor and the user has infinate combitions of sounds availabble at the push of a button. By using the MIDI footswitch one could set the pre amp to patch number 54 and the effects processor to patch number107 simultaniously with one button. kind of handy if you gig out alot and want differnt tones. Its alot easier and less limiting than stompboxes.
The 9200 is a power amp so you would need a preamp. I suggest something geared for guitar like the Mesa triaxis, the Marshall JMP! or my fave the ADA MP1 or MP2! These can easily be found on EBAY. checkout adadepot.com for more details on the MP1 and MP2. they even have soundclips created by users.
happy hunting!!!!!!

The Marshall JMP1. ideal choice of preamp for the 9200... Get an effects processor to chuck into the loop, an you'll be rockin'!
Cool.
Cheers.
