Marshal MXL V93 ?!?!?

Have anyone heard those? I remember Harvey saying something about´em on the old RO forums...
Anyone?
 
I have a V93M my mic cabinet. I can say that I've had great results using it on some vocals as well as acoustic guitar. I even used it on an alto saxaphone.

It is a fairly neutral-sounding microphone (I don't mean "flat" response). The mid-range tends to sound a bit "cold" but not lifeless. The highs are not as "hyped" as let's say a Rode NT2. It is a rather nice mic. Mine was $150 w/ shockmount.


Here's some background info. on signal chain:
- Mackie 1604VLZ-Pro
- RNC 1733 Compressors
- MOTU 828
- Apple G4 Quicksilver

The big difference is that the NT2 has a tasty "gloss" to it in the higher frequencies. Tasty, but definitely hyped.

The v93/2003 is smoother and more natural. They're both great mics, but I get a lot more use out of my v93 than I ever got out of my NT2. And it's like half the price with shock included. The v93/2003 sounds like a condenser should sound. My shure sm7 sounds like a dynamic vocal mic should sound. Between the two, I'm set for now in terms of vocal mics. Untill I start making the big bucks and am ready to step up to Neumanns, I couldn't be happier for now. Very happy user.

And I won't even start on how good it is on accoustic guitars. :)
 
Chessrock, I was wondering what was taking you so long!! Are we the only ones here with the V93M/2003???

And he likes his too, so I'd say the user satisfaction rating on this bugger is pretty damn good.
 
Damn! I just signed on and ya beat me to the V93 post again, Chessrock! Well, since I am here, I'll chime in with positive praise of the V93 too. I agree with what everybody said before me. Its a great all around condenser--useful on voice, acoustic, percussion and for micing electric guitars. Best sound I ever got from my guitar rig was captured with a V93. Can't go wrong with this. $150 with the shock mount. How much would you pay? Don't answer! Theres more!

A while back, there was a frequency graph comparison I saw between the V93/2003 and the Neumann TLM 103. The Neumann was slightly hotter and had slightly lower self noise, but the frequency graphs were almost identical. So, if one needed to pick up a bunch of LD condensers for a studio, this might be the one to get.

I got a mxl2003 but since I don't have any other LD mics I can't realy compare. however (shamless plug :D) here is acoustic song I did entirely with it.

I've used a lot of the cheapies. I've got the 93, C1, SE5000 and I tried the V67. The 93 is definately my favorite out of the group. I recorded a singer with a nasaly tone and the 93 really complimented his voice well. It is great on acoustics also.

What really put me over the edge to get one of these things in the first place were all of the reviews. I don't know if people realize just how many good things have been said about it. This thread, for one, several others if you do a search. Harvey and Alex like it. Do yet another google search on rec.audio.pro and feast your eyes on some surprizingly favorable comments there. Surprizing I say because, aside form Harvey, they don't generally give a lot of favorable remarks to Chinese mics.

THe mxl 2003 is pretty impressive sounding on your tracks.
 
I got one, my first L-C mic and I like it so far. I'm a newbie and don't have a lot to compare it too, but at the place where I got it, I tested it against all the mics and it was the best sound per dollar, for my ears and voice anyway.

V93 on vocals. Also used it as the "shoulder" mic using Harvey's over-the-shoulder technique on the accoustic guitar, with a 603s at the 12th fret.

Please excuse the canned drums. Also excuse my bad harmony vocals on the very last chorus. :)

I was going to also mention about the TLM-103 similarities, but was careful to just go by "specs". I would say that the V93M/2003 fall into similar sound characteristics. I wanted to call the V93/2003 the poor-man's TLM-103 w/o offending anyone.

TexRoadKill, good point about the nasaly voice. That's good info for someone trying to deside on the mic to buy/try or to use.

Have not heard of "Carraskillo" is it a local band here?

I like my 615 though it's "moody" (or my ears :)) sometimes it's great and sometimes I just can't tune the thing even with new strings. Must be the weather changes. I don't know if it will be as good on finger picking but I have a friend with 710 and he would swap for a while.

Chess, I hope an Autotune is on your Christmas list ;) Sorry, couldn't resist. I feel obligated to give you shit when I can. If you heard my vocals you'd know why I prefer recording other people ;)

The signal chain on mine was just a vanilla Roland Studio Pack. I still think for $700 it's the best all in one solution for home demos. I'll be upgrading to much more exotic stuff pretty soon.

The V93 is a very safe purchase. I wish I could say the same for that POS Se5000 I got. I haven't really used the C1 much yet so the jury is still out on that one.

The recordings with Doug are an ongoing project so we'll be doing a few more songs and adding more instruments. I'm pretty psyched about it. Should be cool when we get it all done. I'm doing it for free so I have some high quality engineering demos to use.

Any of you Rochester boys know Rick Rifkin? He is a new age keyboard player that I worked with for awhile from there.
