Marantz PMD660 batteries

Hello, I am looking for help finding the best rechargeable batteries for this unit. I have even had poor success(less than 90 minutes) with regular alkaline AA's; lately, I have not been able to power up the machine with alkalines. It work fine with the AC adapter, so I suspect weak batteries. I am even willing to but a newer recorder that has a dependable rechargeable battery. I use this machine in the field for bird vocalizations.
