Slowing becoming un-noob.
So I've heard of programs out there that I can install on my computer and then hook up my keyboard through midi and the program will record what I play onto sheet music. Anyone know of any programs that do this? I used one when I was really little, like 7 years old. And that was 10 years ago, I'm sure there has to be something out there.

Thanks for the help!

I have a yamaha S08 keyboard that I plug into computer through USB which works for midi....if you need to know to help.

Thanks!

EDIT!: A PROGRAM LIKE THIS!! http://www.codamusic.com/printmusic/ ...except cheaper

I think pretty much any DAW or midi program will do what you ask to some extent. Finale seems to be the most popular for straight sheet music. You are on this website, so I'm assuming you have a DAW, it probably does it. I use SONAR which does. Do a google search, you'll find something i'm sure!

I have Finale 2006, and I don't have a manual for it, but as far as I can tell from experimenting (as my sole purpose was to just plug in my midi and have sheet music created for me) is that you can create sheet music using the notes on the Finale screen... but hey, if someone can tell me the settings to just play and have it write it out for me, I would gladly listen!!! :)

What exactly is a DAW?

And also, I want a program where it will record what I play in realtime. Do most DAW's do that?

DAW= Digital Audio Workstation

Cubase has a score function built in

Sibelius, without a doubt.

What you are looking for is Sibelius v. 4 score writing program.

Besides it competing with Finale for 1st place for scoring, it does not have any competition with regard to Real Time playing and scoring - the very thing you were asking about.

Here's how it works:

With all the DAW programs listed thus far, they are unforgiving in the MIDI record department. What does that mean? Simple - if you don't play perfectly on queue with the computer clock, your notes will fall before or after the measure/beat, and your sheet music will look hideous.

To correct that, you would be forced to hand move all your notes and try to make the valuations work, which is a nightmare. Nobody ever does it.

SOooo, the next trick those DAW's will suggest you to do is.... Quantize. That's another dummy trick. I have NEVER gotten satisified results using this feature in either my Sonar software, nor my Kurzweil keyboard's built-in sequencer.

But with Sibelius, it is different.

The intelligent program actually is able to follow your playing style, and slows down or speeds up to make your Real Time playing of notes and chords, fall into the proper positions for sheet music.

I know of no other program that has this feature.

Todd, I didn't know that about Sibelius. I'll have to check out the copy in the school lab. I've been avoiding switching from Encore, but that little feature might help me reach escape velocity.

Alright, that sounds like a totally kickass program. How much does it cost now?

I have Sibelius 3. Indeed it kicks ass, It was about $300 a few years ago. I think 6 is about 400?? Its not particulary easy to learn, but nothing is. I too liked Encore, but I dont think its been updated in 15 years :D and is nowhere as good. Too bad, because its very easy to learn.

Finale and Sibelius are the leaders. There are others that work, any program with midi wil have SOME sort of functions, but the ones like Sibelius are pro-level notation progranms.

BTW, I'm a big fan of LilyPond - really hard to use, BUT it works with flat text files. If you can get past the learning curve (I'm still on training wheels), it makes some gorgeous looking scores. So far I've only produced one SAB hymn with it, and don't even know how to do a refrain or cue notes, but it's all in there. Very deep, and I can build my files at work cos it's all text. Rather than wasting time here, LOL.

Oh, and the best part - it's free, baby. And a lot of LilyPond scores are available on-line.

If you set up a keyboard with MIDI into Cubase, it will make the sheet music for you.
