I've got a nero 5 burning rom which (as they rightly claim) makes audio CDs which no player can read. Does anyone have any idea of how to make a playable CD from a compactflash card?

Why does nero make CDs that no CD player will play? I'm not trying to insult your intelligence are anything, but are you sure that you are burning with the right settings? Maybe you have it set on data instead of audio? And maybe you are not finalizing the CD?

If I am wrong (probably am) maybe you should look for some free CD burning software. Although I don't think they are free, I've used Roxio and Musicmatch for burning CDs and both work well. I think the later versions of Win Media player also burn.

I use Nero (5, I believe) and it works great for audio CD's - must be a setting issue.

or it could be that the CD's are not being 'Finalized"

I used the Nero wizard, selected audio CD, and got the message "for audio compilations the use of CD-RWs is not recommended, since many audio players will not be able to read these CDs". The wizard automatically finalizes, so that isn't the problem.

THat's it right there- you are using a CD-RW.
Now, the cd player in my wifes car CAN read CD-RWs- but the player will usually say "Can play CD-RWs" instead of only "Can play CD-Rs"

The Suggestion would be to stop using CD-RWs and use plain old CD-Rs. If you time it right and send in your rebates, you can get 100 for $10 (plus tax).

actually, on some sony equipment (namely, my friend's surround dvd player), you can't even play CD-Rs!

Actually I am using CD-Rs - in my ignorance I thought RW stood for the rewriter itself. They still don't play in my stereo, but I've now discovered they play in a Walkman. Obviously the Sony is not the only stereo which doesn't play CD-Rs.

This is weird. I have some old stereo equipment. The CD player is probably one of the first ones that came out and it plays my CD-Rs. Maybe you should try to find a cheap or free burner program to try just to see if it is a software or harware problem? Just grasping at straws here.

Yep. Did that. Could it be that some new stereos, not old ones, are programmed not to play CD-Rs? Many stereo manufacturers are also involved with the record business.

OKay, so what stereo cd player do you have?
Also, what is your burner? I have a Sony burner (which is really just a re-badged liteon!) and I've had no issues...

Another potential factor could be what cind of CD-Rs are you using? Some people have issues with 80 min discs, but no problems with 74 min and 99 min!
From some random guy in the internet so it MUST be true: "The 80 minute cd's did not conform to the original cd specifications, & HP refused to "officially" support them. I got into that 4 years ago with my HP 7570i 2x2x24 cd-rw. Obviously, that has changed. 80 minute cd support was an admendment to the cd specifications (audio) and 99% of cd-rw manufacturers support them. Audio cd player manufacturers are slightly behind the times.
"

Some might say its your software, but Ive had GREAT experience with NERO- and bad times with B's recorder gold (which came with the Sony nee liteon)- I can't say enough bad things about B's recorder gold- from not recognizing mp3's to simply chopping songs off 10 seconds into it (just because!) consistently...

That is so weak!

I've decided to test the CDs on a few more systems to as not to waste everybody's time if it's only my (Philips) stereo the CDs don't work on. Thanks for the advice.
I was using 80min Cds, if that's relevant.
