Ok so here is my problem. I am experenceing small dropouts, that progressivly get worse to the point of no sound play back while playing/recording in Reaper. I'm also getting crackling durring some play back in windows. At first I was thinking it was because I didn't reinstall Windows after installing the new parts, so I wiped my system drive clean and started a new. But alas it's doing the same thing. I would move my interface to a different PCI slot, but this motherboard only has one PCI slot on it. All the others are PCI-E slots. I have googled the crap out of this to no avail. IF any one has any Ideas I'm open to suguestion, but as it stands now I just upgraded the CRAP out of my Rig, and its not delivering. The only thing that seems to sort of make change is if I change the Khz from 44.1 to 48Khz the problem goes away for a little bit, but then Reaper (or the audio driver not sure which) Crashes after a while. So I then have to "End Process" on reaper.

Normally I would be the one doing the tech support, but I am stuck. I cant figure this out for the life of me. I just upgraded my Computer from:

AMD Athlon 64 X2 6000+ 3Gz
Patriot 4 Gb DDR2 800
MSI Geforce 8600GT
EMU PCI 0404
All on an Asus M2N-E Motherboard.

TO:

AMD Phenom II X6 1100T Black Edition 3.3GHz, 3.7GHz Turbo
G.SKILL Ripjaws Series 4GB DDR3 1600
MSI GeForce GTX 580
Same EMU PCI 0404 interface
All on an MSI 890FXA-GD70 Motherboard

Operating system on both is Windows Vista Ultimate x64.

Please don't bother telling me to move to Windows 7 i just spent a ton of cash on hardware. I cant afford to spend more money, and as well my audio drivers for win 7 are still beta. Also I know the GTX 580 is a bit high for a DAW, but i game on my rig too. I also do Web design, and 3d moddeling as well as other art work. I can only afford one Computer, and I hate gaming on a console (even when the NES was new). Besides any of that I was doing all the same stuff on this setup as my last, and it handeled it just fine.

Thus far My theory is a hardware problem. For example the mobo chipset is not giving the standard PCI express port enough priority or something of the sort. But I don't know, and this is why I am here. I figure worst case is I need to bite the bulklet and buy a new interface or Motherboard. Btu I want to be sure first.

Thanks in advance for ANY help, and sorry for the long post!

Are there any other PCI cards that could be causing problems, try disabling anything that isn't a necessity during recording?
Try disabling on board sound.
Are you using wireless? if so disable it.

There is no other PCI card in the machine, just PCI-express (video card). No wireless, the onboard is dissabled. Ironically the on-board audio works fine though. I have only used it breifly for video play back, but there were no clicks, pops, or dropouts. I did that test to atleast try and isolate wherer the problem is. I am starting to thing there is a compatabillity problem between my 0404, and the motherboard.

Yes. Driver is up to date. One of the things I always do after a reinstall is make sure I have all the most up todate drivers.

You have 17 questions left.

Are you using the ASIO driver or WDM? 32 or 64 bit?

Disable the onboard soundcard and install ASIO 32-bit driver.

Vista is notorious for audio problems and Win7 is reported to be much more stable with audio.

You now have 15 questions left.

ASIO 64bit driver. (I have 4GB of ram I am not using a 32bit OS.)
On board audio disabled in BIOS since first boot, and still is.
Vista = problems. Been using since launch. This is the first problem I have had (Trying out windows 7 anyway) just incase OS installed badly I'm going to reinstall again. But I'm gonna give Win7 a shot first. if problem is the same then I KNOW it's hardware.

I have 9,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000 * 3.14159265... left.

Seriousely though thatnks for the input guys. Even though I may have covered most of this stuff. My rule of thumb is if you've checked it 3 times Check it 3 more.

Well Windows 7 installed, and the problem is still there. So, software be damned it is a hardware issue.

Another update. I just tried it with my old GeForce 8600GT on a whim that perhaps there was somkind of conflict happeneing, and the result was the same.

A wild stab in the dark but I had some problems with O/C software in the dim past, can't remember the brand but is the processor running stock or turbo?

but then Reaper (or the audio driver not sure which) Crashes after a while. So I then have to "End Process" on reaper.

This might be an important distinction. Do you get an error message when the crash happens? Are you using 64-bit Reaper? I find a few 32-bit plugins to give me audio crackles in 64-bit Reaper as well. Does it happen to you no matter what plugins (if any) you're running?

Funny enough, I've found Windows 7 64-bit to almost completely fix the "wireless card crackle" I had with XP on the same system.

Cables are fine, No over clocking not even the memeory (CPU @3.3ghz, Mem@1333). Reaper is 32bit, no error message just the "Blah, blah, blah has stoped responding" while the audio is hung.

Some new stuff happened last night. I decided to see if it may be a driver problem since EMU is notorious for bad drivers. So, I tired using the Kx Project audio driver wich has worked in the past on my card. This time it did nothing. Now the card seems to be broken, also the onboard sound wont even work any more. I'm starting to think this motherboard just needs some butter cus it's toast.

Later after work I willl install the EMU card in my other computer to confirm it being a brick. Which is a shame if it is bricked caus I have had it for almost 10years. Oh well guess it's time.

Well I have the E-mu card installed in my 2nd computer under Win7 (RC). This is the free RC that MS released a long while back. I installed once, and updates turned off. So it's as virgin as an install can get. My EMU is working, 100%. So I am left to belive there is something wrong with my Motherboard on my main rig. Still welcoming any input one might have.

And, thanks for all the input you guys have given. This has prooved to be quite a hicup.

In your bios are you able to assign IRQ's and reserve IRQ's?
Do some research on reserving IRQ's in google, and I think that may help.
It sounds to me that the hardware in your machine isn't giving the correct priority to your soundcard.

It sounds to me that the hardware in your machine isn't giving the correct priority to your soundcard.

This is exactly what I was thinking. However I can't look into manually assigning IRQ's now. During testing my memory sticks individually my BIOS stopped posting. I'm calling MSI later today, hopefully they replace the board.

Board is being. RMA'ed through newegg. I called MSI tech support, and the guy agreed. After all the steps I've taken it was either the processor, or the mother board. He leaned more towards the mother board, and told me to go ahead and RMA. I figure I would try my luck and RMA through newegg first. I would rather get e new board, than a repaired one. Thanks for all the help guys, and here's to hoping a new mother board fixes the problem.

Sorry to hear of our issues. It sounds like a hardware issue. I am a dedicated reaper user and have found that 64 bit mode creates oddities. I run Reaper in x86 mode on a machine similar to your upgraded device, no problems. I hope your van is not next to the MS river.
