Mains spikes a problem

I'm getting very loud 'static' spikes coming thu my setup at power up. Nasty bastards some of them, too (like someone snapping a dry branch up against a Neumann mic with the gain cranked). The desk is a Soundcraft 6000.

Two possible clues (for those in the know): the problem subsides after about 15 minutes, and the problem seemes to have gooten worse after moving the desk into the adjacent room (different mains spur).

I'm using an old TOA power distributer, which supposedly cleans up RF and stuff, although I don't think it's all that great. I bought it mainly to have everything on the one plug.

Cheers for any help.

Maybe this is a dumb question but are you turning on the power amp for your monitors after turning on the console? Most mixers will make a big bang if you power them on when the monitors are up.

He does mention that the problem continues for 15 minutes, which is not normal.

If it is a power problem with the mains, then wouldn't continue beyond 15 minutes? It sounds like more that has something to do with the board or the board's power supply warming up.

Have you tried powering up the board without the TOA? I think you need to eliminate that as the cause of the problem.

Agreed. Narrow it down to one piece of gear, then disassemble that device's power supply and look for cold solder joints.
