'madonna'

Sorry I haven't listened to much stuff here lately - work and sleep and obligations have been getting in the way. It ain't gonna change real soon, but I got this mix done this weekend, and I'd be grateful for feedback. Anything's welcome really, but again, I'm really curious about the bottom end.

As long as you keep making music as good as this, I don't mind Dobro!

The 'holy ground' choir at 1:35 is AWESOME. Could be mixed a little bit louder even. :)

Bottom end sounds fine on my speakers.

Is your guitar broken or something? Most of your latest music barely has any, and Original Sin is full of it. And I kinda like your guitarplaying. Not that I mind the synths...I like those too. I just like to know whether it is a conscious choice, your current 'no-guitars'-approach...

pretty psychedelic.. the low end sounds good over here.. maybe raise the vocal level.. that wind chime thing @1:32 is louder than the vocal.. the strings started to drive me insane by the end.. some of the repetition.. very cool though..

You have a very interesting singing style...got me listening to your other stuff. Not your typical progressions here.

Your voice reminds me of the dude from XTC.

If I was to give mix advice I would only get a laugh from you.
Interesting sounds, kinda grows on you.....scary.

Dobro,

This is really ineresting sounding, David Byrne kinda.

Mix sounds very balanced, bass sounds right to me, but what do I know (see Cream cover).

Technically, maybe the vox could come up a notch, but I have phones on, so it's probably fine.

Nice work!!

Dobro!!!!!!!!!

I hope your life doesn't get too full to post new music for us:eek:
I'm a fan for a while now and it's good to hear the latest mix.
You seem to be raising the bar on a pretty consistant level with some of your latest stuff.............
I LIKE in other words:D

The bass sounded loud enough and sat well in the mix. It might have been too smooth. Loved the bells but they stepped on the vocals a bit.

Great production overall.

Sam, Doug - thanks for the feedback about the bells - definitely one of those 'you don't hear it till new ears tell you about it' things.

Thanks all for listening to the bottom on this - I gotta get myself a sub - I just guess about all that stuff south of 70Hz based on feedback I've got here before.

That's different for sure. It's got a movie sequence thing going for me.

For fun, I'd try layering 2 more tracks of unison vocal over this. I'm not saying by any means that it would be best for the song, but in the spirit of experimentation....

The bell sound is a nice touch, but I'd like it to have more distinct notation. Right now it's just high end glitter on my monitors.

The low end sounds like it's pushing it on my monitors which tells me it might be rough of systems with woofers. I could be wrong, but these things don't even want me to know there's even such a thing as a bass, so I get very nervous when I hear any boominess on them.

I really dug the song Paul, as usual. I think I'd like to hear an acoustic guitar come into this, and I don't want to wait too long for it. It doesn't need to be a traditional chord strumming yada yada been done a zillion times thing. But I just need that organic tone to balance the synths. That is of course my little opinion, and could be based on mood.

If you leave it as is I won't skip it on the CD.

Thanks.

Tom

Quite a trip on headphonies...

...a noveau-Eastern (Japanese?) feel to it... esp. the synth patches/layers....

Your voice and note choice remindsme quite a bit of New Order's lead singer...

The voice sits in the middle w/the same ambience, fx on it throughout... an idea would be to give it some movement (panning/filter sweeps/etc) ...

Some of the bleeps/beeps/bips could use ambience on 'em... as is, it has a kitschy (but likeable) early 80's electronica production to it... Frankie Goes to Hollywood B-side, or something.

IMO the production could be greatly enhanced by some layers of depth (verb) between the tracks... and possibly some more grating/even "harsh" layers in small doses, to offset all the soft-sounding synth stuff.

Not too bad.

Pretty much agree... my comment about a more "abrasive" or "harsh" contrast to the synths was along these lines... would give your arrangement some more depth (imo)

Sluice, participant - yeah, I agree with you. I put most of this together when I started getting into Fruity Loops, and a lot of the stuff that came out of that time sounds a) different and b) like it was put together out of a musical meccano set. It's like what Sam was saying about the repetitiveness of the strings driving him nuts. It's gotta be balanced by live playing, you're right. The only thing that's live on this one is the bass and the voice.

Two approaches: add some guitar, like Sluice said. Or cut some of the Fruity elements and make the whole thing more spare, so the bass has more presence.

participant - ambience, yeah, but I don't know how to do that LOL.

Thanks for the ideas about the bass and bells, Sluice. :)

Well here's my idea (let's make this a group song!:D):

What about getting rid of the strings altogether? I hear this as a spare, rhythmic kinda thing and those strings - aside from emphasizing the "mechanical" aspect - just don't fit for me.

That spoken part in the middle reminds me so much of Randy Newman's song "Mr. Sheep". Dobro, if you haven't heard that song, you gotta. I swear he's plagerizing you.:)

So yeah, I'd ditch the strings - maybe layer a little more percussion in there too. But I'd definitely like to hear how it holds up stringless. I suspect it would be very cool.

Chris

On first listen I thought you were saying "holy crap" :D

Pretty cool stuff here. Bottom end sounds fine. I like groucho's idea about the strings. It could work either way. I'd say the strings on the first beat of each bar in the left speaker would need to stay if by chance you take that approach.

Your unorthodox style makes it hard for me to critique the mix, but it sure makes it easy for me to enjoy the music. I like your style and you do good work. Another really good one here. Great dark spooky feel. In my opinion you use synthesizers the way they are meant to be used.

Ooh, this is different

Groundhog day---anything different is good.

I am not sure if "I" like it, but it is well done. Instead of losing the strings like Groucho mentioned, drop them an octave. Make them viola's and cellos. The bells are also just a little hot.

groucho - okay, I ditched the strings, but it sounded too spare - it lost all its chords. But then I tried just ditching the strings on the first verse and bringing them in on the second, and I like the effect way better - thanks for the nudge. :) Naw, I haven't heard that R Newman song. I saw him play in Toronto once though.

fps - thanks for that - as for the synthesizer you mention - I wish I had one LOL. It's Fruity Loops.

sloop - this thread's been a goldmine of ideas. I'll try that idea of yours. Might also start out with cellos and violas and work up to violas and violins. Hmmm... And yeah, I cooled the bells. I think I'll take a look at shaping them as well to give them a different attack, like Sluice suggested.

So many ears, so much talent in here.

I see people talk about fruity loops. What's that? Midi? Samples? Whatever it is you use it right.

Phil, I'm not trying to market the product LOL....but it feels a bit silly to try explaining it when you can find all information about the package right here...

Yay, another bump for Dobro. ;)
