Gone
I decided to use HP high gloss double sided paper to do the inserts and tray liners. Works pretty well and I can get away with cheap ink and reasonable print times. In fact they look better than the half gloss neato kits, and are 4 times cheaper.

There are still some things to work out. I'm going to have to come up with a good system for running these off without driving myself crazy. Each CD Set requires two sheets of paper, front and back. Printing takes about 5-10 minutes per side....and about 30 minutes to one hour to dry each side (actually I can do two liners at once so it's not quite that bad) Then I have to steal one of those paper cutter things because I can't cut a straight line with scissors...I can probably get one at work. Then I have to come up with a good way to fold the liners so they don't pop out.

I might have worked out a way to steal a printer identical to the one I'm using from work as well. That'll double-time things.

At any rate, CD's will start going out soon, but don't feel bad if you don't get yours for a while. Dragon gets the first one, plus the original masters. Then I'll probably go in order of payments starting with Doc.

These babies will be going on sale soon. Keep your eyes on this forum if you're interested! (remember, this comp CD contains very dated material....at least 2 years old, with some stuff submitted from way back.)

Also, when it comes time to order, please only do so if you really truely are interested. There are a limited number of these things and they'll never be worth anything 'cept a good memory or two. I'm absolutely not trying to discourage anyone, but if you're just passing through the BBS, don't buy one....so maybe I'm discouraging a small group of people. :) If you love this place as much as I do, then buy away! (one per person)

They will be $20 + shipping. Yes that's steep but only out of fairness to everyone who pre-ordered at $20 each to get the project off the ground. All profits will go to the BBS so it's for a good cause!

Really?

You're a step behind my berated brother that spawned the amazing Davemania Project!

>Then I'll probably go in order of payments starting with Doc.

I wasn't first to pay, or was I? I know I was "on time"- that's all.

But I don't mind the pay-off for the expedite post activity.... :D

You & dave can do the next one.

If I remember correctly, you were the very first person to pay. In fact, I think you're the only person I let pay with a personal check! I forget the reasons now though...it has been a long long time.

All you need to know is that the check cleared, first time around with no bullshit, right?

>You & dave can do the next one.

We're not that naive! At least I'm not. Dave?

I'm Fucking Honored! Did I get a write-up in the multi-media portion of this? Now I'm embarrassed!!!

Gee, it's real purdy when you post two messages together like that.

Do it again.

Thanx. CD projects are great fun, and a lot of work, too.

Since "Davemania" began, about 9 months ago, I've fabricated [100] 4-cd sets. That's [400] discs, jewel cases & labels, and [800] cards, with all cards being hand cut. It was a considerable task that took me many, many hours [days/weeks/months] of tedious manual labor, which took up much of my spare time, over the months. I don't regret it, but would I do it again? Hmmmm.

I wouldn't do a multi-cd set, but I'd consider a single cd release of some sort, at some future time. I think the HR "comp" cd is a good idea, and I know there are some very talented people on this board. I think you could do a fresh new comp cd every year, right? Haha.

I'll probably retire the Davemania free cd project, after #100, which is a mere [2] more copies, which should go within days. As of this writing, Davemania discs are still available.

-[BTW, Neophyte: pls email me again with valid info, thx/DA]

I'll think about more cd production, but most of all, I've got to get back into practice, work up my chops, find some new inspiration, and create some new tracks, for fun and just to stay fresh. Davemania is also dated material by now, so I know what you mean, about material getting dated.

I will give you a tip, Slack. For hand cutting the cards, I used an Exacto knife on a large plastic cutting board, with a metal edged ruler as a straightedge, -hand cut each card with 5 or 6 hand cuts each, [4 cuts and either 1 or 2 scored lines]. To get the card/inserts to fold just right, with a crease, you'd 'score' the line you intend to fold on. It's tedious manual labor, but this method makes for a clean cut, and clean folding cards and inserts.

Good luck, & I'll watch for the actual release of your cd. Thx, & t/y later. /DA

I did some of ours that way and, in hindsight, wished I had spent an extra $10 on the big ol' papercutter (you know, the "guillotine" type).

Probably buy one for the next CD. Beats that XActo shit, hands down.

Especially if you're cutting on top of a phone book (you oughtta SEE my phone book. Looks like one million yellow spiders gettin' it on. lol).

:D

I typically use the CD Stomper Pro and the Stuff that came with my burner for the art...But one thing popped into my head that I didn't think off. Has anyone gone to Kinkos to see if having them make color dupes of the original artwork is faster and cheaper than the one by one handmade masterpieces? It takes me at least 1/2 hr per cd to print and cut the pieces, it takes probably 45 minutes total to make a CD package...an Ive only made 25 CD's in a year. Id hate to see Slack spend the next nine months doing nuthin but printing and cutting cd art...

Peace,
Dennis

Thanks for the thoughts guys.

atomictoyz...you know I just might do that!

I did some B&W insert art copies at Kinko's once - it was about 6 or 7 years ago. It was mighty expensive - but I don't know what the costs would be nowadays for color. Prolly a lot.
