Welll..... I was quite happy with my Mackie 1202-VLZ PRO..... untill I came on this board and read the anti-Mackie posts... *sigh* Are they really that bad???? I have a GadgetLabs/424 soundcard and my Mackie
thats my little setup, yez.... that doesn't include mics but I have lots of different ones I can use. I am doing a recording for a
school band using Audio Technica 4508's(I thiink thats the #, they are stereo condenser mics regardless....) some SM57's, 2 Mackie 1202's and my GadgetLabs card. Do I have any hope of making a descent recording... the CD I'm making for them will later be sold as a fundraiser and I don't want it to suck the big one. So... do U guys think I have a hope of pullin off a descent recordin with that equipment???? thx....
 
It will be just fine.... The specs on your Mackie board, are better than most people's stereo systems will ever reproduce!

Have fun, place the mikes well and it will sound great!

all the anti mackie threads came from solid professionals in the field.. mackie boards arent exactly considered "pro" so it doesnt surprise me that they arent the best boards in the world , but , they are probably the best for the money.. everyday guys like you and me probably couldnt tell the difference between the pre's on a mackie and the pre's on a more expensive neve board , and if we could hear a difference , we wouldnt be able to say "the neve board sounds better because ________ "... we would just think they sounded different..

we have people on this board turning out great mixes with *no* mixers at all.. you'll be able to get a great finished product with your mackie , dont let the professionals scare you.. :)

heres my shot at an analogy:
jeff gordon drives a race car (neve board) at 200mph all day long.. if then you put him in a $20,000 volkswagen (mackie board) of course hes gonna say its slow and has no pick up , but does that mean its a bad car for the money ? nope..its a great car for the money.. it does the same thing as the faster car , just isnt as great at it.. some people are just spoiled :)..

ps..most people will get in a honda civic and think the pick up is great , when as compared to other cars , its a toy , but they dont know the difference.. most people wont hear the difference between a mackie and a neve after the final mixdown.. dont stress it unless your gonna have metallica coming in for a session this week :)..

I use a 1202 and think the pre's are great. It sounded better than anything I compared costing twice as much. I don't always take advice from the "Caviar or Nothing" pushers.
The important thing, considering you are using a 24bit soundcard, is your software. It must support 24 bit and keep the music you record 24bit until you cut your CD's. I found this out the hard way.

Sabith, use your Mackie with great confidence. If you get to the point (and this goes for any gear) that you feel you've outgrown it, then it's time to start looking around. You'll know when you reach that moment. Until then--your Mackie will serve you very well.

Just another note to put this discussion over the top. I agree with most everybody here. Your Mackie is a great board. I've done wonderful recordings on a 1202 and 1604 (Not even the vlz). If you read between the lines, while many "pros" use other preamps but will still hang onto their old Mackie boards.

If and when you outgrow this board, you will still find uses for it long after your Neve board is up and running. Have a great recording and post your results.
